Tarrasha Kalra, a talented young artist from Apeejay School, Saket, has been chosen as this week’s Apeejay Aspiring Artist. Her striking artwork of a woman submerged in the sea—symbolising the weight of societal pressure—reflects her imaginative depth and creative maturity. In this conversation, Tarrasha talks about her artistic journey, her love for colours, and how her school plays a vital role in nurturing her vibrant talent. Read edited excerpts:

Tarrasha, when did your journey with art begin?
Honestly, I can’t remember the exact moment I started drawing. But I do remember that as soon as I learnt how to hold a pencil and write, I began doodling—and I’ve never stopped since!

Which art form do you enjoy the most, and why?
Painting is definitely my favourite. I love playing with colours, blending them, experimenting with textures—it feels like I’m giving life to my imagination. It’s creative, expressive, and truly fun.

How does Apeejay Saket support your growth as an artist?
My school provides many opportunities to showcase our talent, be it through competitions, exhibitions, or classroom encouragement. We’re also lucky to have wonderful art teachers who constantly inspire us to explore and expand our creativity.

What does ‘art’ mean to you personally?
Art, for me, is more than just expression—it’s imagination in motion. It’s the one thing that truly calms and relaxes my mind. I find peace in creating something from nothing.

How long do you usually take to complete a piece? And what inspires your themes?
That really depends! Sometimes I finish an artwork in 15–20 minutes, and other times, it can take an entire day. My ideas often come from nature, daily life, and the little things we overlook—there’s inspiration everywhere if you look closely.

What’s coming up next in your artistic journey?
I’m working on something inspired by mandala art. It’s such a beautiful and intricate form, and I’m really excited to learn more about it.

Any other hobbies besides art?
Oh yes! I love freestyle dancing. It’s another form of expression for me—just like painting, it helps me feel free and joyful.
