She has been teaching since 2007, but her journey at Apeejay School, Saket began in 2013 where she has been teaching Chemistry to classes XI and XII. And it all started after she completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Chemistry from Miranda House, University of Delhi. She then went on to pursue her BEd degree from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. Meet Onila Mishra who has also done her Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Administration from Symbiosis, Pune.

“I have done a Master of Computer Application from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak. I have undergone training from the Centre for Information Technology, New Delhi in various programming languages too. In the context of Continuous professional development (CPD) as proposed by National Education Policy 2020, I have completed 50 hours of training each year using multiple modes like online and offline workshops, CBSE online courses, MOOCs, DIKSHA portal, NISHTHA, Content Development to name a few,” Mishra said.
Excerpts from an interview.
Why did you become a teacher?
The teaching profession leads to or is the origin of all other professions. Teachers play varied roles simultaneously — parent, teacher, counselor, guide, mentor, and friend. As a student, I have always been grateful to all my teachers and professors for making me what I am today. I became a teacher so that I can make a difference in children’s lives.
How and why did you choose Apeejay?
Apeejay Schools are one of the most prestigious schools in Delhi where modern and latest teaching techniques are used. I always wanted to expand my horizon and associate myself with a school that will provide an ideal platform for the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual growth of the children in its fold.
What are the challenges that come with teaching students in higher classes?
It lies in getting students to be more self-directed. Students get easily distracted and less motivated. Reaching out to students to find out what works and connecting with them on a personal level and building a relationship of trust is a taxing process that a teacher sometimes has to do without the proper support from parents.

You teach Chemistry. How do you make the class interesting?
I try to incorporate fun and interactive techniques with real-life and simple examples to make learning more engaging and enjoyable. Visual aids like Charts, molecular model kits, and 3-D structures always help students to better understand different concepts and retain information. Students also love to make concept maps, flowcharts, and formula lists to understand the concepts in a more relatable way.
Myths associated with Chemistry.
Many explanations are not based on any scientific evidence or concept and these become part of our culture as people keep repeating them but these explanations are more myths than actual truths. I always tell my students to try to reveal the truth behind some of these myths by using concepts of Chemistry.

Students who are interested in studying Science in class XI should have a solid understanding of certain things to succeed in the subject. These are: Possessing a strong foundation in mathematics, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, effective communication skills, genuine interest in the subject, and good time management and study skills

Students these days feel they know everything. How do you deal with that?
I try to approach the situation with patience and an open mind. It would help to understand the student’s perspective and what may be driving their behavior. Some students may express a genuine interest in the subject and wish to demonstrate their knowledge. Others may feel the need to prove themselves to their peers.
I try to engage the students in a discussion to encourage them to explore their ideas further. This approach can help the students develop a deeper understanding of the subject and recognize the limitations of their current knowledge. Also, providing constructive feedback and praise when appropriate can help.
How has digitisation changed how you teach the subject today?
Digitisation has revolutionised how educators approach teaching their subjects, providing opportunities to reach a wider audience and deliver engaging, interactive learning experiences. The Internet has made it possible for students to access an abundance of information, resources, and online courses from anywhere in the world.
I try to integrate interactive whiteboards and e-books during classroom learning to make it more interactive whenever possible. Students also use virtual labs, simulations, and multimedia presentations regularly. We regularly create and manage online assignments, assessments, and grading using MOODLE. These have had a significant impact on education, revolutionising how educators teach and students learn.

What should students know before they take up Science in class XI?
Students who are interested in studying Science in class XI should have a solid understanding of certain things to succeed in the subject. These are: Possessing a strong foundation in mathematics, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, effective communication skills, genuine interest in the subject, and good time management and study skills.
Message for students.
Education is the key to unlocking students’ full potential and achieving their goals in life. Make the most of the opportunities provided by your school and approach your studies with curiosity and enthusiasm. Stay focused, work hard, and persevere in pursuing your academic and personal aspirations.
