The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is the Government of India’s flagship initiative to create and promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across the length and breadth of the nation. Through this mission, new programmes and policies are developed for fostering innovation in different sectors of the economy. It also provides platforms and collaboration opportunities for different stakeholders.

In line with this mission, an innovation competition was held across all schools in the nation to bolster the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship among young learners. Out of nearly 17,000 students with roughly 7200 brilliant ideas, Siddharth Cheema and Gopesh Gupta, class 12 students of Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg in Jalandhar, made the entire district proud by getting shortlisted among the Top 30 innovators from across the nation.

The innovator-duo bagged the coveted position for their socially useful innovation named: ‘𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥’.

Speaking about their invention, Gopesh Gupta said, “We had different themes in the competition. The first stage involved submitting the idea in the form of a write-up. Then we had to submit a video of our project. We were firstly shortlisted under the Top 300 innovators in the nation, and we recently got selected in the Top 30 across the nation. Our invention was a touchless doorbell.”

“The doorbell is touched by all. In this pandemic-era, there is a high chance of the virus being there. So, in this innovation a person has to just place his/her hand before the sensor we installed in the bell and the bell would ring immediately,” he added further.

Gopesh also said, “Mr. Surinder Singh and Pooja ma’am, the head of the school’s lab, helped us a lot. Principal sir Mr. Girish Kumar allowed us to use the school lab facilities even when the school was shut down due to the pandemic. It was a big help!”

Teammate Siddharth Cheema said, “We wanted to keep the design simple and useful so that we could implement the design on a large scale. We used IR proximity sensors on any existing doorbell. One has to keep the hand in front of the bell and it would ring on detecting the heat produced from our body.”

He also added, “The main key for innovation is scrolling through the problems one faces in life and looking at the fundamentals of the design. Also, I would also like to thank Mr. Tejinder Singh, our electronics teacher for his constant support in this project.”

“Featuring in Top-30 schools in ATL Marathon 2020 at National Level, among nearly 17,000 students across the country with 7200+ ideas, was another feather in our cap. It shows how passionately our students wish to improve society through technology. They are the future global leaders whose vision defines the tomorrow of mankind. With this glorious feat, Apeejay Mahavir Marg became the only school in Jalandhar to achieve the impossible. My congratulations and best wishes to them for their future endeavours!”
