IITs, IIMs, NITs and IISERs likely to fall under new higher education regulator

According to news sources, the Indian government is considering bringing Institutes of National Importance (INIs) such as IITs, IIMs, NITs, and IISERs under the purview of the proposed Higher Education Commission of India, a single regulator for higher education.

Currently, these institutions are governed by their own and are not accountable to the University Grants Commission (UGC) or the All India Council for Technical Education. While central universities still receive budgetary grants from the UGC, these IITs, IIMs, and NITs deal directly with the Ministry for financial matters.

There are currently 160 INIs including AIIMS, IITs, NITs and IIMs, which are empowered to hold their own examinations, grant degrees and receive government funding and are governed by their own senates/board of governors but with some involvement from the government as well.
