When meeting someone for the first time, she tries her best to make a good impression and help them feel comfortable. She is polite, friendly, and welcoming. “And introduce myself by saying, ‘Hello, I’m Aishani. Nice to meet you!’ I believe a warm introduction can make someone feel at ease and help build a positive connection,” shares this first-semester student from Apeejay Institute of Design (AID).

In a candid interview, Aishani Roy, who was also conferred the Ms Popular title at the freshers’ party, talks about the most interesting part of her journey to date.

What drew you towards graphic design as a career choice?

It has always fascinated me, especially the way it combines creativity, attention to detail, and visual appeal. I love how a clean and thoughtfully designed visual can instantly capture someone’s attention. Choosing graphic design as a career allows me to explore my creativity, learn new techniques, and enjoy doing something I am genuinely passionate about.

What has been the most interesting part of your first semester at AID?

Everything about my first semester at AID has been interesting and exciting so far. What I appreciate the most is how welcoming everyone on campus has been. The friendly atmosphere makes me feel at home, and both the students and staff are wonderful to interact with. The facilities are excellent, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the assignments and everything I have been learning. Each day brings something new and fascinating, making my experience even more enriching.

How would you describe your personal style when it comes to design?

I would describe my design style as quite neutral and flexible. I enjoy experimenting with different ideas and expressing myself through my work, depending on my mood and inspiration. However, I know I still have a lot to learn and explore. As I continue to grow as a designer, I hope to discover a unique style that truly reflects my personality and becomes my signature identity.

Is there a particular designer, artist or creative work that inspires you?

Susan Kare has always been a major inspiration for me. I have admired her work for a long time, particularly her distinctive approach to design. Her creativity and visual style are qualities I deeply appreciate, and I would love to incorporate some of that inspiration into developing my own design identity.

What is one thing you have discovered about yourself since joining AID?

One of the biggest discoveries I have made about myself is that I am actually quite good at drawing! Earlier, I never considered myself particularly skilled at drawing on paper. In fact, my expectations were quite low, and I thought my abilities were below average. However, after joining AID and exploring my creative potential, I realised that I have more talent than I initially believed. It has given me confidence in my abilities and made me realise that I can challenge myself and compete with others too.

If you could work on any dream design project, what would it be and why?

I think it would be incredibly exciting if a famous film director approached me to design a movie poster! The idea of creating something visually striking for a film really appeals to me. As I continue learning and discovering new possibilities, I am sure I will eventually find a dream project that I would love to pursue.

How is the faculty, and what do you hope to take away from this course?

The faculty at AID is wonderful. The teachers and staff are extremely kind, generous, supportive, and always willing to help. They are genuinely some of the nicest people I have met. Apart from gaining technical knowledge and developing my creative skills, I hope to learn from their discipline, professionalism, and positive attitude.
