Bhavesh Vij recently promoted to class 9 at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar is an exceptional student artist. His drawing of a dragon is so perfect, that one fears after a glance or two, lest the creature emit balls of fire.

Speaking in the Apeejay Aspiring Artist interview series, Bhavesh informs us about his love for painting, sketching and his unique charm for making clay pots and also colouring and styling them.

Read edited excerpts:

Bhavesh, since when did you start drawing?

I started with art primarily during the first lockdown period. As I didn’t have many things to do and in that period of intense scare, art became my guardian angel.  I chose to improve my drawing and sketching skills . Though I was not very good initially but through small paintings I gained massive improvement in my ability to draw. I became better and better with time and began enjoying the process.

I also liked to draw in my childhood years and my parents always gave me the best art kit supplies that could help me in my abilities.

So, which art form is your favourite?

There is not one artform that I like. I love to experiment with different types of art forms and I have the curiosity to learn everything that I could in my own ability. But if I have to pick one single art form then I would go with sketching as it is the most soothing one for me. I can go hours on end making sketches and would not get tired.

How does your school support you as an artist?

I mainly post my art works on the Apeejay newsroom website and that is a great source of encouragement. It helps me to share my art work with everyone. My art teacher also supports me a lot and helps me to grow as an artist .

 What is art for you?

Art gives me the joy to make different sketches and helps me with my mental peace. It helps me kill my boredom,  improve my patience levels and attention span as I focus on only one thing at a time. It also helps me in my academic performance.

How much time does it take you to complete an artwork? What are your common ideas and themes?

If I put all my focus on the artwork it takes me about 5 hours on sketches and on paintings it takes me about 6 to 7 hours. There is not any one particular thing I like to draw. I like to experiment with different drawing themes.

In the recent holidays, I drew a series of paintings and sketches which had a common theme of tribal art. In the sketching category I mainly draw the beauty of nature as well as some anime characters.

Upcoming artworks are on?

I made Goku’s sketch that I would submit shortly on the Apeejay newsroom website. I am planning to work on some more character based sketches.

A new artform you wish to learn?

Sculpting and learning pottery. I always love to make my own pots and color them. Making pots with my hands and coloring them has always given me immense satisfaction.

Finally, your other hobbies apart from art?

I love to play different video games and like going out with my friends to play cricket or cycle around.
