From Idioms to Wordplay: AIMETC Marks Hindi Diwas with Creativity and Literary Fervour

The Literary & Dramatics Club of Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC), Jalandhar, celebrated Hindi Diwas with enthusiasm, creativity and literary fervour, providing students with an engaging platform to appreciate the richness of the Hindi language. Observed annually on 14 September, Hindi Diwas commemorates the adoption of Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as one of the official languages of the Union of India.

The celebration moved beyond conventional language learning through a series of intellectually stimulating and entertaining competitions that encouraged students to demonstrate their linguistic skills, creativity, teamwork and quick thinking. The activities also highlighted how language can serve as a vibrant medium for cultural expression and meaningful interaction.

The competition ‘मुहावरा माइम – Guess the Idiom’ brought together language and performance in an entertaining format. Participants enacted popular Hindi idioms without speaking, challenging opposing teams to identify them correctly. The competition tested participants’ understanding of idiomatic expressions as well as their ability to communicate meaning through gestures and expressions. Dhwani and Waris of MBA 3rd Semester emerged as the winners, while Vishal and Shivam of MBA 1st Semester secured the First Runners-up position.

Adding pace and excitement to the celebrations was ‘शब्द संग्राम – The Word War’, an energetic head-to-head competition that tested participants’ command of Hindi vocabulary. Through synonyms, antonyms, idioms and sentence formation, students competed to demonstrate their linguistic proficiency and presence of mind. Nancy and Harnoor of BBA 1st Semester won the competition, while Kamakshi and Anjali of BCom 5th Semester were declared First Runners-up.

The event also featured ‘शब्द जासूस – The Word Detective’, which introduced an element of mystery and linguistic investigation. Participants were challenged to decode words through a series of clues, identify linguistic connections and demonstrate their vocabulary skills. Muskan and Manvir of MBA 3rd Semester emerged as the winners of the engaging competition.

Congratulating all participants and prize winners, Dr. Rajesh Bagga, Director, AIMETC, appreciated their enthusiastic participation and commendable performances. He emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting the richness of the Hindi language and encouraged students to develop a deeper appreciation for India’s diverse linguistic and literary heritage. He remarked, “Language is not merely a means of communication but also an important carrier of culture, thought, identity and values.”

Dr. Bagga also lauded the efforts of the Literary & Dramatics Club for conceptualising and organising innovative activities that gave students meaningful opportunities to learn, participate and express themselves. He appreciated Ms. Kanika Chopra, Assistant Professor in Business Communications, and Ms. Amarjit Kaur, Assistant Professor in Management, for creating a vibrant literary environment on campus and encouraging students to engage with language through creative and interactive formats.

The celebration successfully reinforced the idea that Hindi can be explored and appreciated through enjoyable, contemporary and participative formats. By combining language with performance, competition and creativity, the event gave students an opportunity to strengthen their linguistic abilities while connecting with India’s rich cultural and literary heritage.
