Engineering or medical have been two most prominent career choices among students after pursuing science. However, with the evolution of new technologies and choosing a career path after 12th science has opened up a world of new opportunities for students. The rapidly evolving landscape of technology and innovation has given rise to new and exciting job prospects.

Let’s explore some of the emerging careers that offer promising prospects for science stream students:

Data Scientist: With the increasing reliance on data-driven decision-making, the demand for data scientists has surged. Data scientists analyse complex data sets, develop models, and extract insights that help organisations make informed decisions. Their expertise in statistical analysis, programming, and machine learning makes them highly sought after in various industries, including healthcare, finance, and technology.
According to Dr Manpreet Singh Sehgal, an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Engineering and Technology at Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram, “One of the most in-demand career paths in technology today is Data Science. Students opting for data science have opportunities to work in various roles such as Business Intelligence Analyst, Data Mining Engineer, Data Architect, and other profiles related to data science. Data scientists are responsible for coding and utilising statistics to transform data, which can aid in the growth of businesses and organisations. They play a crucial role in business analysis and are also responsible for developing data products and software platforms.”

Biotechnologist: Advancements in biotechnology have paved the way for exciting career opportunities in the field. Biotechnologists work on developing new drugs, conducting research on genetic engineering, and finding innovative solutions to global challenges such as food security and environmental sustainability. They play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare, agriculture, and renewable energy.

Renewable Energy Engineer: In a world increasingly focused on sustainable practices, renewable energy engineers are in high demand. These professionals specialise in designing and implementing clean energy solutions such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power systems. They contribute to the development of environmentally friendly technologies and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Cybersecurity Analyst: With the rise of cyber threats, the need for cybersecurity professionals has skyrocketed. Cybersecurity analysts protect sensitive data and systems from unauthorised access, identify vulnerabilities, and develop strategies to mitigate risks. Their expertise is vital in safeguarding organisations against cyberattacks and ensuring data privacy.

Nanotechnologist: Nanotechnology involves manipulating matter at the nanoscale to create new materials and devices with unique properties. Nanotechnologists work on developing nanomaterials, nanoelectronics, and nanomedicine. They contribute to advancements in fields such as electronics, medicine, energy, and materials science.

Environmental Scientist: Environmental scientists play a crucial role in studying and preserving the environment. They conduct research on issues such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Environmental scientists work in collaboration with policymakers, businesses, and communities to develop sustainable solutions and promote environmental conservation.

Robotics Engineer: The field of robotics combines engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence to develop intelligent machines that can perform tasks autonomously. Robotics engineers design, build, and program robots used in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and exploration. They contribute to automation and the development of advanced technologies. Revant Mahajan, Software Development Engineer at Amazon Robotics and an alumnus of Apeejay School, Pitampura, says, “For someone who enjoys hands-on work with tools or wants to write software to control complex systems, getting into robotics is an exciting career path. It is an interdisciplinary field where you can contribute with backgrounds in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Development, Systems Engineering, and many more.”

He further adds, “The skills required in this field are in high demand globally, as economies are transitioning towards more productive and safe automation to boost efficiency. Robotics is still a nascent but rapidly growing sector in India, offering plenty of amazing opportunities in both corporate and startup environments. If you are interested in exploring opportunities outside of India, there are ample options available as well. I would highly encourage students to look at job postings to understand the skills that companies are seeking and the projects that startups are working on. Get inspired and seize the opportunities!”

Space Scientist: With the increasing interest in space exploration, space science offers fascinating career opportunities. Space scientists study celestial bodies, conduct research on the universe, and contribute to space missions. They work with space agencies, observatories, and research institutions to deepen our understanding of the cosmos.

As science continues to advance, so do the career opportunities available to science stream students. By embracing these evolving trends, students can embark on fulfilling careers that contribute to the progress of society and make a meaningful difference in the world.
