‘Elon Musk is my biggest inspiration’

Vikrant Singh, student of class 6 at Apeejay Svran Global School, Faridabad tells us his experience about making an Earthquake detector model and how he draws inspiration from the Tesla founder’s initiatives, particularly, the humanoid bot project.

Could you begin by explaining to us how this model works?

Basically what happens is, whenever there is an earthquake, things around us begin to shake as the Earth vibrates. So here in this model, a nut is attached to a copper wire.  This nut will begin to oscillate when there are tremors.  As the nut oscillates, it will touch a safety pin which is connected to an alarm at the other end of the circuit.  The circuit would then get complete and a loud alarm would be activated, thereby alerting everyone.

How did you conceive the idea of making such a model?

I wanted to make something useful as a part of my Science project for school. I realised that we do not always realise the occurrence of an earthquake, especially one with a lower magnitude. So, I was scrolling through YouTube when I found a very helpful tutorial about making a model about the same. I got inspired and improvised on the tips by looking at a few other videos and came upon the idea for this model.

How did the Science teachers at Apeejay Svran Global School, Faridabad help you in making the model?

My Science teacher Aastha Sindhwani encourages me a lot. She updated me about the Science competition which gave me an opportunity to make this model. She also gave me enough time to ponder over the idea and make the model, step by step. I found her support very helpful.

Who was the inspiration behind this Science project?

Elon Musk is my inspiration. He is such an innovative person. I want to grow up and become like him one day. He is my inspiration behind this Science project.

All of Musk’s space projects inspire me a lot. Especially the latest Tesla Bot project. It is a humanoid bot which will be used to do various tasks dangerous for humans. I find the design of the Bot very attractive.

Tell us about some of the other science projects you are working on at present?

I just finished another Science project today. It is a game actually.  There is a loop of copper wire which one has to pass through another copper wire without touching it. Once touched, there is an alarm which gets activated.
