This wordsmith from Apeejay School, Saket aims to make it to the top Ivy League college

You name the most complex word in English and this genius will spell it on his fingertips. Meet Adam Bashneen who is studying in class X at Apeejay School, Saket. In a candid interview, he expressed his relentless admiration for spellings.

Tell us about your recent achievements.

I recently appeared for the Spell Bee State-level Examination, where I scored a perfect 100/100 and secured the top position in the state. Before this, I also excelled at the Inter-School Level, achieving a flawless 100/100 score there as well.

What inspired you to learn spellings?

I have always enjoyed reading and learning complex spellings, incorporating them into my writing. I previously took the same exam in Class V, where I topped both the Inter-school and State Levels, secured second place nationally, and ranked among the top 20 globally.

Tell us your favourite English word whose spelling was most difficult.

The most challenging words I learned were floccinaucinihilipilification and pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, both of which tested my spelling skills to the fullest.

What’s your favourite book and author and why?

My favourite book is 1984 by George Orwell. I admire it for the author’s insight into how words have the power to both heal and harm. The plot is flawless, and Orwell’s chilling portrayal of a dystopian society leaves a profound impact.

How did you overcome the challenges at the competition?

I learnt phonetics in Class V, which gave me a significant advantage over other competitors. It allowed me to write the words even before they were fully dictated, making the competition much easier to navigate.

How did Apeejay School support your journey?

The teachers of the English department played a crucial role in building my vocabulary from the start, and I am grateful to Principal Sir for providing us with opportunities to participate in such competitions.

What’s your ambition?

My ambition is to attend a prestigious Ivy League university and make a meaningful impact on the world through innovation, bringing pride to my school and parents.
