Summer is the perfect time for schoolchildren to enjoy outdoor activities, play in the sun and embrace their vibrant personalities. So, when it comes to summer styling, it’s essential to prioritise comfort while ensuring that you look trendy and stay protected from the heat. But can fashion make you look smart and feel good at the same time? Experts say, yes!
A freelance fashion stylist, and alumna of Apeejay School, Noida, Saloni Kohli, says, “Teenagers must not necessarily follow the common trends to build up their sense of style. Moreover, they are at an age where each one is understanding more and more about themselves and their bodies. So, the best approach is to pick what you feel confident in.” Truly, gone are the times when the only source of inspiration were newspapers and magazines. At present, the teens have so many online and offline sources to learn from, be it an Instagram handle, a Facebook group or even their favourite celebrity!
So, as per, Kohli, Gen Z can simply go for brands that go well with their sense of style. “You can also opt for bright colours such as pink and purple this season. In case you are travelling for a vacation to a beach side, don’t forget to carry an oversized or a basket hat. Further, those looking to conquer the hills, must have a statement puffer jacket that completes their look.” In addition to these, chunky sneakers, baggy pants and light-weighted accessories are quite in vogue, according to her.
Thus, let’s explore some more fantastic summer styling hacks that will make you look cool, fashionable and ready for all the adventures the season has in store.
Opt for breathable fabrics
Choosing lightweight fabrics is key to being comfortable during hot summer days. So, look for materials such as cotton, linen and bamboo, as they allow air circulation and help wick away moisture, keeping the body cool. Avoid synthetic fabrics that can trap heat and cause discomfort.
Embrace bright colours and fun prints
Summer is the perfect time to embrace new colours and playful prints. Dress in cheerful outfits featuring bright hues like yellows, pinks, and blues. Floral patterns, tropical prints, and nautical themes are popular choices that add a fun and summery vibe to the wardrobe.
Protecting your delicate skin from harmful UV rays is crucial. Say yes to clothing with built-in UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) or go for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants made from tightly woven fabrics. Don’t forget wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield your faces from the sun.
Dress for easy breezy play
Choose loose-fitting shorts, skirts, and dresses made from stretchy materials. Elastic waistbands and adjustable straps are great features that ensure comfort and flexibility as you play outdoor games.
Mix and match
Create a versatile wardrobe by encouraging mix-and-match styling. Invest in a few key pieces like solid-coloured shorts, skirts, and tops that can be easily paired with different prints or patterns. This allows for a wide variety of outfits without the need for an extensive wardrobe.
Stay cool with hats and caps
Hats and caps not only provide sun protection, but also add a stylish touch to any summer outfit. Opt for materials like straw or cotton in 2023. Floppy hats, bucket hats, and baseball caps are standard choices that offer both style and shade.
Accessorise with jewellery
Add a touch of whimsy to your summer style with lightweight accessories. Colourful beaded necklaces, friendship bracelets and anklets can enhance their outfits and showcase individuality.
Fun footwear for every adventure
Summer calls for footwear that is comfortable and suitable for various activities. Sandals, flip-flops and water shoes are ideal for beach trips and pool days, while lightweight sneakers or canvas shoes are perfect for running, playing, and exploring. Choose breathable and quick-drying materials to safeguard foot comfort.
Hair protection and style
Protect your hair from the sun’s harsh rays by styling it with hats, headbands, or scarves. These accessories not only add flair, but also shield the scalp from sunburn. Braids, ponytails, or top knots are practical and stylish hairdos that keep hair off the face and neck, promoting comfort in sultry weather.
Confidence above all
The most important summer styling hack is to prioritise your comfort and confidence. Express your unique style and personality through clothing but don’t go overboard.
Lastly, as per Drishti Kathpalia, an alumna of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, who is a Fashion Design student at Pearl Academy in Delhi, “Throughout summer, choosing loose silhouettes would be a smart choice as it’d be feminine and chic too. So, look for options which do not necessarily cling to the body as well as prevent trapping excess heat. It will definitely be a win-win situation! Additionally, hats and scarves can protect your body from the harmful UV rays and make you look like a fashion icon too.”
There are endless ways to create stylish and practical outfits. But don’t forget to prioritise aspects like comfort and mobility while pairing them up. With these tips, I hope you are ready to enjoy a summer filled with fun and style.
