The story follows Drew Brockman and her friends who are still haunted by the memory of being pranked on Halloween by a pair of school bullies, Tabby and Lee. Determined to get even, they hatch a clever revenge plan involving some frightening jack-o’-lantern costumes. However, as Halloween night progresses, things begin to spiral out of control in true Goosebumps fashion. What starts as a prank ends in a chilling twist that no one sees coming.
Characters That Trick and Treat
Drew is a likable protagonist with a strong sense of justice, and her friends Walker, Shane, and Shana add layers of energy, planning, and suspense to the plot. The bullies are classic Stine-style villains—mean enough to loathe, but just human enough to feel real. The twist involving Shane and Shana is the icing on the spooky cake.

Why This Book Hooks You
It’s the eerie Halloween setting, the mix of anticipation and humour, and the way Stine plays with the reader’s expectations that makes this book a great read. He blends real-life fears—like betrayal and getting lost—with fantasy horror, creating a chilling blend perfect for readers aged 8-12. The pace is tight, and the buildup to the climax is truly satisfying.
A Literary Pumpkin Carving of Suspense
R.L. Stine’s brilliance lies in taking an everyday event—like trick-or-treating—and twisting it into something diabolical and unexpected. Attack of the Jack-O’-Lanterns is not just a Halloween story; it’s a clever reminder that sometimes, the scariest tricks are the ones that don’t go according to plan. With this entry in the Goosebumps series, Stine keeps his streak of fun horror alive and burning bright like a lantern in the dark.
