The School of Legal Studies (SoLS), Apeejay Stya University, organised a ‘Legal Aid and Awareness Camp Program’ at BSM Public School, Hazipur,  located in the Sohna block of Haryana’s Gurgaon district, on April 20. Around 25 students from the department participated in the camp, accompanied by faculty members. The event was coordinated by the Legal Aid Committee of SoLS.

At the camp, students and faculty members from the Law Department interacted with young learners, staff, and the villagers, to promote legal awareness and empower them with legal knowledge for their problems or cases.

Poonam Sharma and Parkash Chodhary, final year students, hosted the programme. They gave an overview of the law and the importance of free legal aid camp and its benefits. Some other students shed light on topics pertaining to our day-to-day lives. Members in the audience asked about solutions for legal issues like physical assault, property dispute, kidnapping, etc.

Some pertinent issues addressed in the camp included right to life, right to education, values and institutions of parliamentary democracy, rights of women and children, power and functions of the President of India, and more.

The programme ended with a quiz, followed by the distribution of refreshments to the participants.

Mr Amit Singh, Associate Professor, SoLS, and Mr Anuranjan Sharma, Assistant Professor, SoLS, shared valuable thoughts on why legal aid camps are crucial and also encouraged the audience to pursue law as a career option.

“As part of the world’s biggest democracy, every Indian citizen has the right to vote. Those who are above the age of 18 can exercise this right to vote in the government of their choice to power,” said Saksham Arora, a third-year BA LLB student.

BA LLB fourth-year student Miran Mittra added, “The laws are made to protect citizens which is why it is important to learn about them, and that is why we conduct legal aid camps.”

“Law is a dynamic field of study. Knowledge of law is a well-known presumption in society, based on the maxim, ‘ignorantia juris non-excusat’. Therefore, it is an imperative need to know the basic laws and societal norms to better deal with our day-to-day legal issues.”
