Students of Class 6 of Apeejay School, Model Town, took part in a Global Pen Pals activity with Cubahiro International School, Burundi. The event was a part of the British Council project Global Narratives, Diverse Voices.

The exchange gave students a chance to communicate with young learners from a different continent. Through carefully written letters, the students introduced their partner-school peers to their region, culture, traditions, lifestyle, and personal identity. In return, they were able to learn about the lives and stories of students in Burundi, discovering the world through the voices of fellow learners.

The activity was built around the theme ‘Shared Roots, Diverse Voices,’ which encouraged students to look at how people in different parts of the world can be very different in their customs and surroundings while sharing many of the same hopes, values, and everyday experiences. The letters became a medium through which students could present their own heritage with pride while showing curiosity about another culture.

Teachers noted that the project went well beyond a writing exercise. Composing letters for an audience they had never met required students to think about how to express themselves clearly, choose what to share about their lives, and write in a tone that was warm and welcoming. The initiative helped strengthen communication skills, empathy, and cross-cultural understanding, while building an appreciation of diversity among the young participants.

The project also encouraged students to look beyond geographical boundaries. By reading about the lives of children in another country, they were able to see how the aspirations and experiences of young people are often similar, whatever the distance between them.

Global Narratives, Diverse Voices is a British Council initiative that links schools across countries to promote intercultural dialogue through storytelling and shared learning. For many students at Apeejay School, Model Town, the pen pal exchange was their first direct communication with a peer from Africa, making the experience both novel and memorable.

School authorities said that participation in international collaborations of this kind reflects the school’s commitment to providing students with exposure that goes beyond the classroom and the textbook, and to nurturing learners who are curious, empathetic, and globally aware.

Through the Global Pen Pals activity, the Class VI students of Apeejay School, Model Town, showed that a simple letter can bridge continents. Different roots, diverse voices, and shared stories came together to remind them that they are part of one connected world.
