Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA) commemorated the 99th birth anniversary of late Mrs Rajeshwari Paul, the esteemed First Lady of Apeejay Stya Group and wife of founder chairman Dr Stya Paul. The event took place at the college campus where students and faculty members paid heartfelt tribute.

Dr Neerja Dhingra, principal, ACFA, conveyed a message from Mrs Paul’s only child and daughter Mrs Sushma Paul Berlia, Chairperson, Apeejay Education, and Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University, to the gathered attendees.

It was Apeejay’s First Lady’s vision to facilitate holistic development through the promotion of art. She was a noble soul with a vibrant personality. She had an MA in English literature, was intelligent and ebullient, had wide-ranging interests, and was a charming conversationalist.  As described by Mrs Berlia, she led a simple yet profound life. She exemplified kindness and selflessness and had a passion for Kathak dancing, swimming, and adventure. Her influence inspired the establishment of Rajeshwari Kala Sangam, which later transformed into ACFA, Jalandhar. The institution proudly carries forward her legacy, catering to aspiring artists and making art accessible to all.

In her message, Mrs Berlia expressed admiration for her parents, the founders of Apeejay Education, and their deep love for various forms of Indian art. Their commitment to preserving and promoting culture was highlighted.

Meanwhile, Dr Dhingra paid tribute to the visionary First Lady of Apeejay, emphasising how teachers and students uphold the rich heritage of Dr Stya Paul and Mrs Rajeshwari Paul. They diligently work towards spreading the essence of art throughout India.

To celebrate the occasion, students from the Department of Music, ACFA, enthralled everyone with their recital of hymns, while the Department of Dance captivated the audience with mesmerising Indian classical performances. Students from the Department of Arts showcased their talent by creating a portrait of Mrs Paul, making the day more memorable.

Principal Dr Neerja Dhingra expressed her appreciation for the tremendous efforts of faculty members Dr Arun Mishra, Dr Monika Anand, and Dr Seema Sharma, whose contributions greatly contributed to the success of the programme.

‘A celebration acknowledging art and aesthetics’

Apeejay Institute of Management and Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC) also organised a similar event in memory of Mrs Rajeshwari Paul. Dr Rajesh Bagga, AIMETC’s director, read out Mrs Sushma Paul Berlia’s moving message for her mother.

“This birth anniversary is a celebration that acknowledges the art appreciation, aesthetics, and generosity that were unique to Mrs Rajeshwari Paul Ji. Rightfully, these have organically become the characteristics of Apeejay Education as well. Love for Art and Culture was ingrained in the very persona of Rajeshwari Paul ji. She had an abiding love for both performing Arts and Visual Arts.

“Both my parents shared each other’s nobility, kindness, hard work, commitment, love for Indian art and culture and simple living with high ideals rarely found in the fast materialistic world of today,” the message read.

Mrs Paul was a nurturer keenly involved in various charitable works, Dr Bagga added, while highlighting her immense contribution to education. She was one of those rare people who rose above others to bring hope and faith into the life of many, making them better and more beautiful.

The AIMETC director concluded his address by stating that Mrs Rajeshwari Paul’s legacy of art and culture, and generosity of spirit would continue to live and thrive in the Apeejay institutions and in the hearts of everyone.
