The word “yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” which means “to yoke” or “to unite”. This concept of union refers to the integration of the individual self with the universal consciousness. Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science, which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an art and science of healthy living. According to the National Institutes of Health, scientific evidence shows that yoga supports stress management, mental health, mindfulness, healthy eating, weight loss and quality sleep.

Many people practice yoga at their home. As they find it difficult to enjoy or even to start because of a perceived sense of competition or judgment. Thus, it also saves time and money. However, practicing yoga at home can be rewarding, but it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure safety and effectiveness:

1.   The first and the foremost point to be taken care of is to choose perfect space, the area should be spacious, there should not be any disturbance. The floor should be even and non-slippery.

 2.  Wear comfortable, stretchy clothes that allow free movement.

 3. Every beginner should start with simple and basic poses and gradually progress to more complex ones.

4. It is advisable to avoid in a state of exhaustion, illness, in a hurry or in an acute stress condition. As stress can impair your mental clarity and focus.

5.  If your body is aching and it is not able to stretch properly, don’t fret, as all bodies are not equally flexible. You should listen to your body’s requirements and act accordingly.

6. Stay hydrated: Drink water before and after your practice, avoid large amounts during yoga to prevent discomfort.

7.Consistency: Set a regular time for practice to build a consistent routine.

8. Incorporate Relaxation: Finish your practice with a relaxation pose like Savasana to allow your body and mind to integrate the benefits of yoga.

Thus, by incorporating these tips, one can create not just a safe and effective yoga practice at home but also garner effective results.
