The global language of business, English, has intrigued professionals and scholars alike, around the world. The beauty of the language is such that it allows us to say the same thing in many different ways, whether it is through a choice of words or imagery.

Tailored to stimulate the interest of the literary enthusiasts, Apeejay School, Saket, hosted a week-long event called ‘Literati – the English Fiesta’. It was organised by the English department of the school and consisted of a plethora of literary and creative events.

The Fiesta was inaugurated by a prolific and notable writer Mrs. Rashmi Trivedi.  She has 7 bestselling novels to her credit. As the guest speaker for the event, she inspired budding student writers and poets with her pragmatic suggestions. Students thoroughly enjoyed their tete-a-tete with her and gathered useful tips on writing and getting their works published.

Other events included, DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) activity which was held throughout the week. It attracted more readers to share their favourite novels. An attention-grabbing activity held was “Shakespeare’s Characters Come Alive”. This was open for students of classes 7 to 9 as they donned the famous characters created by the Bard of Avon. Another highlight of Literati was “Poetry Slam” where students of classes 9 and 11 presented their unique spoken-word poetry. It came as a great opportunity for young learners to express their thoughts eloquently.

Besides this, ‘Ekphrasis – Pen Portrait of a Picture’ was organised for class 11 students. During this activity, they observed paintings and interpreted the artwork in their own words. In addition to this, students engaged themselves in a letter writing activity called ‘Dear Beloved’.

Class 9 summarised and interpreted newspaper articles into diverse forms of meaningful poetry. Their ‘Fun with Newspaper’ activity proved to be a holistic learning experience. Students of class 8 enhanced their writing prowess by weaving interesting tales for the event ‘Tangy Tales’. Each student tweaked a fairy tale and gave it a new plot. They also composed amusing limericks.

‘Calligram – Shape Poetry’ was undertaken for class 7 as the students created beautiful shape poems. They also exhibited their exemplary writing skills by weaving interesting stories based on a given character and plot.

“Every language has a unique essence and flavour; we need to enjoy the uniqueness and dive deep to gather the hidden pearls…”

-Dr. Sujeet Eric Masih, Principal, Apeejay School, Saket

Students of class 6 actively participated in ‘Listen Santa’. They wrote a letter to Santa and showcased their creative and imaginative abilities. Moreover, they composed captivating Acrostic poems on the given prompts. Learners from classes 4 and 5 enacted their favourite character from evergreen fairy tales.

The primary wing of the school wasn’t left behind. Class 1 enunciated funny and amusing tongue-twisters. Students of class 2 recited poems and those in class 3 narrated stories using props. All these led children to discover the joy of storytelling and develop interest in literature.

Overall, students exhibited great zeal and interest in these literary activities. The school initiative was a resounding success. It has already become a much awaited event for the next session.
