Professional networking is of great importance in college, regardless of the country. But in India, it holds significant value due to its potential to open doors to various opportunities and enhance career prospects.
Building a strong network allows students to connect with professionals, industry experts, and alumni who can provide information about job openings, internships, and relevant career opportunities. Networking can help students gain access to the hidden job market, where many positions are filled through referrals and personal connections.
Dr Alka Munjal, Director, Apeejay School of Management opined that professional networking is a great way to gain information about industry. “Networking with leaders and peers in a student’s area of specialisation helps to get tips and gain advice from others who are successful,” Dr Munjal said.
The advantage is that colleges in our country have strong alumni networks that offer excellent networking opportunities. Connecting with alumni who have established themselves in their respective fields can provide students with valuable contacts, mentorship, and potential job prospects. Alumni networks often organise events and meetups where students can network with successful professionals and gain inspiration from their achievements.

“This allows students to reach out to potential employers and understand about job opportunities that may not be available through traditional channels. Networking can lead to mentorship opportunities, which can provide guidance and support as one navigates their career path. Networking is a great way to practice your social skills, make changes as needed, and practice more,” Dr Munjal shared.

Steps to build professional networking
A great way to build one’s network is to participate in career fairs, industry conferences, seminars, and workshops happening both on and off-campus. These events provide opportunities to meet professionals, industry experts, and potential mentors. Engage in conversations, ask thoughtful questions, and exchange contact information with people you connect with.

“Students can even network by being active on LinkedIn. They should go to as many events as possible and attend guest speaking events and introduce themselves to each speaker. They should also take the guidance and help from the Corporate Resource Centre of their institute in building the network,” she advised.
Even professors, instructors, and academic advisors can be valuable resources for networking. They may have connections in your field of interest or be aware of relevant events and opportunities. Take the initiative to build relationships with them, ask for advice, and express your career aspirations. They can provide guidance, recommendations, and potentially introduce you to professionals in your field.
Advantages for students
“Networking matters because it helps students meet people in different industries that could lead to future opportunities. Networking may seem like a daunting task at first, but it is actually one of the best ways to secure employment as a fresh graduate. It allows them to build lasting relationships. It also provides valuable information about jobs that are available in other fields of work rather than just what is advertised on online portals,” Dr Munjal said.

By networking with professionals in their field of interest, students can gain valuable insights into industry trends, emerging technologies, and market dynamics. Conversations with experienced professionals can provide a deeper understanding of the industry landscape and help students align their skills and knowledge with industry requirements.
Here are some more benefits for the students

Through these interactions, students can learn from their experiences, gain insights into different career paths, and identify areas where they need to develop their skills further. Networking can also lead to opportunities for attending workshops, seminars, and industry events, which can enhance their knowledge and skills.
Building a professional reputation: Networking allows students to establish their professional presence and build a positive reputation among professionals in their field. By engaging in meaningful conversations, sharing their ideas, and showcasing their skills, students can create a lasting impression and be remembered by potential employers and industry peers.
Entrepreneurial opportunities: For students interested in entrepreneurship, networking plays a vital role in connecting them with investors, co-founders, and like-minded individuals who can support their entrepreneurial endeavors.
