Know Your Teacher: ‘Students have the power to make a positive impact on the world’

When you teach a subject like Math and Computers, you are bound to have a long list of qualifications. The same is true for Rajni Virmani, who has been a PRT teacher at Apeejay Svran Global School, 21-D in Faridabad. Not only has this teacher done her BCom and MSc (Computer Science), but she has also done her MA in Economics, BEd, MEd, and Nursery Teacher Training. If this was not enough for her, she has also been part of various online programmes conducted by the British Council, Udemy, and the Central Board of Secondary Education’s official website.

“I have been a PRT teacher now for 10 years and all these years have been spent teaching at Apeejay itself.  In the present session – 2023-24 – I am teaching Math to class V and Computers to classes I-V. And my main inspiration to become a teacher is the love that I have for children and the positive impact which I can make in their lives,” Virmani said.

Excerpts from an interview.

You teach computers. How important has it become to be tech-savvy today?

In today’s world, being tech-savvy has become increasingly important, as technology is integrated into almost every aspect of our lives. This is particularly true in the field of education. Here technology is rapidly changing the way teachers teach and students learn. As such, it has become essential for us to have a basic understanding of technology and its applications in the classroom.

How has digitalisation changed the learning experience for students?

It has transformed the learning experience for students by providing them with greater access to information, personalized learning, collaborative learning opportunities, blended learning options, and more effective assessment and feedback mechanisms.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of being a teacher?

It is the opportunity that I have to make a positive impact on the lives of students. As a teacher, we can inspire and motivate students to reach their full potential, help them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and provide guidance and support as they navigate their way through life. Seeing students grow and succeed in their academic and personal lives can be incredibly rewarding and can create a sense of satisfaction and pride in our work as a teacher.

Do you think respect for a teacher has to be earned or commanded?

Respect for a teacher has to be earned through our actions and behaviour toward our students. We, as teachers, should show care, compassion, and professionalism. Our knowledge about our subject will help to earn the respect of our students.

Why did you choose Apeejay?

It is a pioneer institute in the field of education and has great brand value. So, once I was done with my education, it made sense to come and teach at the best of the best. And so far, it has been a great learning and teaching experience. Got the opportunity to work under the guidance of great mentors. Students treat me as their mother in school. That leaves me with a great feeling.

How do you maintain a work-life balance?

My family is very supportive and they guide and help me on the personal and professional front. I am lucky that I have them in my life.

A message for the students.

Believe in yourself, stay focused, and never give up on your goals. You have the power to make a positive impact on the world.
