Excerpts from an interview.
What inspired you to teach?
I was inspired to become a teacher when I started working as a lecturer in a college. I witnessed how teachers can guide students, serve as role models, and positively impact their paths. This experience motivated me to make a difference in the lives of students. I am passionate about guiding, coaching, and mentoring students. It is my goal to create a positive and supportive learning environment where students can grow academically and personally. Seeing the progress and achievements of my students continues to inspire me.
You have been a teacher for over two decades. How has your journey been?
I have had the privilege of working at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg in Jalandhar since July 1998. I have been provided with abundant opportunities for personal and professional growth. Starting my teaching career at age, around 20-21, I discovered a genuine interest in education.
I have always aimed to go beyond traditional teaching methods and provide students with an enriching and inclusive learning experience. I firmly believe in teaching with compassion and treating each student fairly, irrespective of their academic scores. Understanding the basic principles of human psychology has been instrumental in fostering a better teacher-student relationship.
What is the teacher’s role today?
It is our responsibility to nurture and develop well-rounded individuals with balanced personalities. Apeejay School follows a value-based curriculum that aligns with this objective, allowing us to shape students who possess not just academic proficiency but also strong character and moral values. As an educator, I am dedicated to empowering students to become job providers rather than job seekers.

What are the challenges that come? How do you deal with them?
There are many challenges like training oneself as per the changing environment, dealing with behavioural aspects of all concerned, changing technology, knowing more about latest teaching learning methods, making the content convincing, and interesting for students, giving best in research area, keeping the young generation on right track, teaching the human values to students.
Apeejay Education is supportive as well. During COVID-19 when the entire world came to a standstill, we were given all kinds of support to run the full-fledged school from home. We got full technical, financial, and emotional support from our Apeejay Education during that pandemic also.
What are some of the changes that have taken place in teaching in the last 25 years?
There have been several. The implementation of more rigorous academic standards, the burdensome process of evaluating teachers, the incorporation of social media and advanced technology, the prevalence of depression and anxiety among the younger generation, the challenge of ensuring a safe learning environment and issues related to student enrollment. There are other changes as well like changes in teaching and learning methodologies, adoption of hybrid learning models, concept of remote work or work from home, focus on value-added courses, emphasis on the holistic development of students, and introduction of interdisciplinary approaches in education.
“It is our responsibility to nurture and develop well-rounded individuals with balanced personalities. Apeejay School follows a value-based curriculum that aligns with this objective, allowing us to shape students who possess not just academic proficiency but also strong character and moral values”

How easy/tough is it to score a centum in Commerce?
Achieving a good score in Commerce is certainly attainable if students have a strong grasp of the concepts. The key factors that contribute to success in this field include conceptual clarity, diligent practice, and guidance on exam strategies. I provide students with regular practice assignments that contain anticipated Board questions. These assignments allow them to familiarise themselves with the exam format. I conducted a webinar specifically focused on providing students with valuable tips on how to score high in the Boards.
I also take it upon myself to guide and mentor other faculty members, ensuring they follow the same approach in preparing students for Board exams. Together, we strive to create an environment that fosters academic excellence and supports each student’s journey towards achieving their goals.
Importance of taking real-life instances to teach a subject like Commerce.
One of the distinctive aspects of Commerce is its practical approach. To enhance students’ understanding and provide them with real-life experiences, we organise educational excursions to various establishments like banks, industries, and other relevant institutions. These offer students the opportunity to witness firsthand the practical application of management and accounting principles. Through these experiential learning opportunities, students can bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation.

Why and how did you choose Apeejay?
I feel fortunate that Apeejay chose me. Getting the opportunity to work in the premier Apeejay School was a dream come true. I was aware of this big name and after going through many rounds of interviews, I got a chance to work with such a visionary management. I evolved as a person here and that process of evolution continues.
How do you motivate underachievers to do well?
Every student has a unique personality and accordingly different approach and perspectives. My teaching philosophy revolves around avoiding forceful methods. I believe in explaining concepts in a simple and accessible language. I guide and counsel them to work gradually but consistently and try to gain their trust so that they can discuss their problems freely. Respecting the dignity of each student is a fundamental principle I uphold. I aim to boost their self-esteem. This approach nurtures a growth mindset and encourages students to embrace challenges without hesitation.
Message for teachers who are starting their careers.
Love your organisation, accept people, and be an effective team member while continuously learning and growing. Enjoy your work and strive to give your best. Don’t forget to be a good human being and contribute to the betterment of the organisation. Uphold ethics in all your endeavours. Teach students without any favouritism. Last, you must avoid offering private tuitions as it can lead to unethical practices.
