It is no surprise that Earth Day and Book Day are commemorated one after the other each year. The former is celebrated on 22nd April and the latter is observed on 23rd.  Rightly so, environmental preservation and education must go hand-in-hand, only then we will be able to forge the change we wish to see in the world.

To mark the importance of these two special occasions, students of Apeejay School, Rama Mandi in Jalandhar participated in a range of educational and action-oriented activities. The celebrations began with a special assembly in which students showcased a beautiful Earth song followed by a thought, poem, an informative talk and some mind-boggling facts. In addition to this, an insightful video was also shared with them to remind them about their duties towards Mother Nature. The Principal of the school, Mr A K Sharma graced the event to motivate young learners in their thoughtful endeavours.

Further, Mrs Aarti Shorey Bhat, the Vice-Principal of the school addressed the gathering. She discussed the importance and value of reducing, reusing and recycling for ecological conservation. In addition to this, she urged students to plant more and more trees. She said, “We all share this planet. Each creature holds a special place of importance in it. Therefore, it is our responsibility to take care of our Earth.” With this, the motto: ‘I exist, you exist; I thrive, you thrive; I falter and you falter’ was made popular among young learners to address the concern of environmental degradation.

Besides this, the school also hosted a session on the importance of books in our lives. Ms Bhat urged students to read more and try to moderate the use of social media. She said, “A book is like a voyage where you travel to unknown destinations and return to your paradise a more knowledgeable soul.” To further inculcate the spirit of reading and environmental protection among students, a myriad of exciting activities were conducted in the classes.

The joy of the day was doubled up as tiny tots from classes 1 and 2 engaged in creating healthy and nutritious recipes. The school recognised the contribution of all students with prizes on the big day. Therefore, as part of the tiffin-making competition, class 1 students Aaradhya Bhat and Ranveer Singh pocketed the first position, Karanvir Singh stood second and Angel Singh and Harmeet Singh were declared third. In the class 2 category, Mannat Kaur stood first, Bavanjit Singh came second and Manroop Kaur bagged the third prize.
