An associate professor at Apeejay College of Fine Arts in Jalandhar, says stay relevant in the market by mastering new technologies in Computer Science

India is known to be a leader when it comes to IT and software. Computers and the Internet have transformed our lives. With the rapid advancement in technology, especially post-COVID, the demand for professionals in this industry is going to increase at a rapid pace.

This has made growth prospects for Computer Science professionals will also rise exponentially. Media reports suggest that employment is expected to grow 13 per cent from 2020 to 2030. Though this field is remunerative, you should pursue a course in Computer Science only after due consideration.

Dr Roopali Sood, Associate Professor, Head, Department of Computer Science & IT, at Apeejay College of Fine Arts said you have to be passionate about learning Computer Science subjects. “You should be clear whether you want to work in the corporate sector or start a venture. You must also have the temperament to work as a team, and be focused about the domain. For example, Networks, Programming, Databases, Analytics, Web Technologies, and Ecommerce to name a few,” Dr Sood said.

Skillsets employers are looking

1.       Basic logic of programming concepts to be strong so that candidates can adapt easily to any platform.

2.       Most upcoming fields require candidates who have a combination of statistical tools and techniques, R language and tableau knowledge for data compilation and visualization.

3.       E-commerce based jobs need freshers who have a sound knowledge of web technologies and open source platforms like WordPress and React.

4.       For AI and Machine learning based jobs, post-graduation in relevant fields are preferred.

5.       Digital marketing and content writing jobs require sound knowledge of digital marketing platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram along with web analytics and website design and development.

6.       Mobile application development is a blend of UI/UX and Coding, sound knowledge of Python/Java and graphical tools for front end interface is required.

“Besides this, interviewees are looking for graduates who have a pleasing personality, have good interpersonal skills, have a vision, can think out of the box, are innovative, and have analytical bent of mind,” Dr Sood opined.

Computer Science and IT is a vast domain, she said and added that at graduation level all the Computer Science subjects are briefly covered. To opt for a specialised domain, post-graduation is needed.

“Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA) has several programmes where almost 70 per cent learning is practical. This helps students to acquire industry knowledge making them ready for the job from day one,” Dr Sood said.

Working in this sector has several advantages. Besides, the fact that the sector offers lucrative salaries right from the beginning, with experience and specialisation, salaries tend to increase significantly.

“Computer Science skills provide a solid foundation for entrepreneurship. There has been a rapid rise in technology startups, and computer science graduates are well-equipped to establish their ventures. Initiatives like Startup India, provide funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities,” Dr Sood explained.
