This Class XII Commerce student of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, is an international Taekwondo player and Pride of Apeejay awardee. With over 50 medals, he recently competed at the CBSE North Zone competition. Unfortunately, his experience was disappointing, and he could not win a medal despite preparing seriously for the competition. Meet Yakshit Sharma.
In a candid interview, he discusses his approach with opponents during competitions, among other things.
What was the toughest moment for you during the recent competition?
The toughest moment was losing despite being fully prepared. I had performed well last year and was ready to compete again. Being defeated in one of the starting rounds was difficult for me.
What did you do differently while preparing this time?
My training was much harder this time. I trained before school and again after school. I put considerable effort into improving my fitness and technique. Although the result was not what I had expected, I know that I gave my best.

How do you approach different opponents during a competition?
Every opponent has a different style. During the opening part of each round, whether it lasts one minute or two minutes, I study the other player. I observe whether the opponent prefers attacking or defending. I then adapt my game and use my skills accordingly.
How long have you been practising Taekwondo, and what skills have you gained?
I started learning Taekwondo when I was in Class III. I have now been practising it for almost 10 years. The sport has given me a great deal of confidence. Until Class V, I was very shy and found it difficult to speak to people. As I began winning awards, I became more confident and motivated to achieve more. The recognition I received also encouraged me to continue working hard.
How has Taekwondo changed you as a person and a player?
It has helped me become more confident, disciplined, and comfortable while interacting with different people. As a player, I have learnt to understand my opponents, adjust my strategy, and remain focused during a bout. Every achievement motivates me to improve further.
Who have been your biggest supporters and sources of inspiration?
My parents, coaches, and teachers have been my greatest supporters. My teachers at school have helped me considerably. My coaches have trained and guided me throughout my journey. My teachers have helped arrange and prepare all the necessary documents. My father has accompanied me to every competition. Earlier, my mother also travelled with me to each event. Each of them has played an important role in my journey.
What is next for you after the CBSE North Zone competition?
My next goal is the School Games State competition. I recently won a Gold medal at a tournament and was selected for the state-level event. I have already started training for it. My experience at the CBSE competition has made me more determined. I want to work harder, strengthen my skills, and prepare myself to perform at my best.
