Learning to recognise an uncomfortable situation and asking for help are parts of a child’s understanding of safety. With this in mind, the Science Department of the Primary Department at Apeejay School, Noida, held a sensitisation workshop for students of Classes II and III. Titled My Body, My Boundaries: Understanding Safe and Unsafe Touch, it focused on personal boundaries and the steps children can take when they need support.

The session opened with a Safety Detectives theme. Students were encouraged to think about everyday situations involving touch, personal space and safety. The discussions, suited to their age, centred on a clear idea: their bodies belong to them, and they have the right to feel safe and comfortable.

Simple steps children can remember

The workshop introduced three safety superpowers: NOTICE, SPEAK and TELL. Students learnt to pay attention to their feelings and body signals. They were also taught to say No or Stop when needed and to tell a trusted adult if something made them uncomfortable.

The S A F E Safety Plan gave them a sequence to remember. S stood for Speak Up, A for Away, F for Find a Trusted Adult and E for Explain What Happened. Together, these steps showed children what they could do in an uncomfortable situation.

The ideas were reinforced through interactive situations, questions based on roles, videos suited to their age and role plays led by teachers. In everyday scenarios, teachers demonstrated how students could respond, move away, speak up and seek help. These activities connected the safety steps to situations children might recognise.

The workshop ended with the message My Body, My Boundaries, My Voice. Its focus remained practical throughout: helping students respect personal space, notice when something feels wrong and know whom to approach.
