Learning about community helpers through art

Recently, Apeejay School, Saket, organised a Community Helper Puppet activity for its kindergarten students as part of the Integrated Learning Programme. The activity focused on the gardener and helped the young learners understand the value of this important community helper.

During the activity, the children were given a gardener cut-out to colour. They then pasted the cut-out onto an ice cream stick to create their own gardener puppet.

Learning through a Creative activity

The simple activity gave the students a chance to learn through art and hands-on participation. As they worked on their puppets, they became familiar with the gardener’s appearance, work, and contribution to the surroundings.

The session helped the children understand that gardeners care for plants and help keep outdoor spaces clean and green. They learnt that tasks such as watering plants, looking after flowers, and maintaining gardens require regular care and effort.

By focusing on a community helper they often see around them, the activity made learning more relatable. It also encouraged the students to notice and appreciate the people who help maintain a healthy and pleasant environment.

Building skills through play

Apart from introducing the role of a gardener, the activity supported the development of several important skills. Colouring and pasting helped improve fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. The children also used their creativity while completing their puppets.

The activity strengthened their bilingual vocabulary as they learnt words related to the gardener and gardening in both English and Hindi. This made the lesson more meaningful and engagingly supported language development.

Such activities allow young children to understand everyday roles through experience. The activity helped the students develop respect for community helpers and recognise the care that goes into keeping the environment clean, green, and well-maintained.
