Delhi – An ever-blooming capital!

Delhi can be intimidating at times. The city has also time and again displayed its potential to be impersonal and business-like. But still the ‘DNA’ of ‘Dilwalon Ka Sheher’ is beautiful and bountiful. Afterall, Delhi and its people bloom in different ways in different seasons.

Be it Palash in March or Gulmohar in May or Amaltas in June, Delhi always blooms in different colours round the year. Here’s a fun article about 5 flowers and fruits that decorate the ancient capital from March to June.

March- If Spring be here can Palash be far behind

Palash also known as Semal tree is in full bloom in March. Entire Delhi is red with joy as spring finally arrives and gives respite from a cold piercing winter.The streets are all decorated with thick red palash flowers, within which one can see the white strands of cotton. Of Course it is heavenly to walk here but be careful, while these flowers may look ethereal, they are a big cause of slips and bike trips on the road.

April- Blushing pink with Bougainvilleas

April might be the cruelest month for Geoffrey Chaucer but different shades of Bougainvillea ensure that Delhi does not break its people’s hearts in April. The most beautiful flowers of these are without a doubt the pink Bougainvilleas, whose thick lovely bushes enthral parks, houses and even roadside shrubs. But the orange, white and red Bougainvilleas are a treat to watch too especially during sunsets.

May- Fire of Desire- The Gulmohar

Delhi shys away with desire like an innocent bride and groom, as the cool summer night breeze fills in the city with hope. The city burns in the red fire of Gulmohar as this lovely floral fire catches the top of the trees and gives birth to a lovely mix of orange and red on green canopy. This Gulmohar blooming is the subject of many songs and poems, especially in Arijit Singh’s song ‘Khul Kabhi Toh‘ from Shahid Kapoor starrer movie Haider

June- The Yellow shower for Delhi

With rains patiently waiting around the corner and the heat wave slowly going upside down, similarly do these upside down hanging beauties bloom. And in the truest of words, they paint entire Delhi yellow, rich in bliss and calmness. Every true Delhite waits an entire year to watch the Amalatas shower take control of the city. Be it the Delhi University campus area or Lodhi Gardens or any other scenic spot, Amaltas flowers proudly bloom and one can even spot them in both sides of the Delhi metro lines almost throughout the entire city. It is certainly an absolute regal experience to watch.

July and Jamuns

With the arrival of the rains and the month of sawan, the Jamun tree bears fruit and slowly comes into the picture. Streets and roads turn purple with wonder as these berries fall down at will from trees. This purple delight is surely a welcome change from the heat wave as it indicates the seasonal cycle beginning to head towards autumn. Most people love tasting Jamun, plucking fat berries from the trees or carefully washing and eating any uncrushed piece near their feet. 

An ever blooming capital 

While Delhi still has many improvements and concerns be it in the cultural aspects or the work life balance of its inhabitants, nature seems to compensate for the greyness by adding a plethora of natural colours in the inner landscapes of this city and hopefully in its people. 

But anyhow, big words for another time. As for May 2, just seize the day! Catch in the Gulmohar fire before Amaltas steals the show away!
