Humanity faces a range of global challenges, such as climate change, pandemic outbreaks, and economic inequality. Addressing these challenges requires a collective commitment to human values like cooperation, sustainability, and social justice. These values need to be taught to students when they are in school. Apeejay Education in its commitment and endeavour in the pursuit of excellence, encourages the students and awards various scholarships every year.
One such award is the prestigious Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values which is given to students who exhibit a deep sense of human values and a high level of integrity in his/her behaviour and conduct. Meet one such recipient of the coveted award – Vidhi Gupta, a student at Apeejay School Faridabad in Sector 15.
In an impromptu interview, she talks about what human values mean to her.
What was your reaction when you received the award?
I was thrilled when I came to know that I had this award. I am on cloud nine. My parents were extremely proud of me as were my teachers. My parents told me that I had got this coveted award and the news was very satisfying.
What was the process like?
It was simple. First, our principal took the interview of the students who had been nominated for this award. Following this, we had a written test where we had to answer a few questions about human values.
How would you define human values?
These are values that make a person human. Values like kindness, honesty, and generosity should be present in every individual. If each one of us imbibes these values, the world will be a better place to live shortly.
Why do you think you got this award?
I try to be honest in my dealings with people. I also help others with whatever I can as much as I can. For instance, I help my friends whenever they need it and this is not restricted to the school. I try to lend a helping hand to people outside of school as well.
A trait that inspires you about Dr Stya Paul.
When he set up the Apeejay Schools, one of the things he wanted was to teach human values to the students and not just academics and extracurricular activities. This is inspiration since not many schools bother about teaching moral values and their importance to students.
What act of kindness would you suggest for others?
I would first understand what that individual wants to do – be it donate money, clothes, and even food. It could even be volunteering to teach underprivileged children. I would even suggest that they do something for the environment like planting more trees or reducing their carbon footprint. For instance, I make a lot of posters that talk about saving the environment whenever there is an event in this regard at the school.
How can we conserve our resources?
Several small habits can go a long way in conserving our limited resources. A small act like switching off the electricity when the gadgets are not in use can save coal. Turning off the tap and not wasting water while we are brushing our teeth can save this precious resource.
