In an increasingly interconnected world, students in India need to be global citizens. Understanding and practicing human values prepares them to engage with a diverse and globalised society in a responsible and empathetic manner. Incorporating human values into the education system in India is not only important for the individual development of students but also for the betterment of society and the nation as a whole. It promotes a more inclusive, just, and harmonious society where individuals can thrive and contribute positively to their communities and the world.

Therefore Apeejay Education is committed to the holistic development of students and ensures that they become ethical human beings with the highest standards of honesty, humility, and integrity. The students who personify and exhibit these values in their daily lives are awarded the prestigious and coveted Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values.

Meet one such recipient – Jasnoor Kaur Dhillon – a class VIII student of Apeejay School, Rama Mandi. In a candid interview, she talks about how her parents and teachers have been instrumental in helping her get this coveted award.

What was your reaction when you got the award?

It was surreal. At first, I couldn’t believe my ears when the teacher told me that I would be getting this award. Once it all sunk in, I was thrilled beyond words. My parents were happy for me as well.

Have you heard of these awards before?

Yes, I had. It was in class VI; I was nominated for this award back then as well. But I could not make it to the final round.

What did you do differently this time around?

I think I was more true to myself and therefore the answers that I gave came out more authentic.  Also, I knew how to attempt the answers better.

Were you nervous about the interview?

Definitely. I had a verbal interview with the principal sir. He is new so I was extremely nervous while giving the answers. I was sure that I would muddle this time again. But the principal sir was extremely nice and kind and made me feel at ease. This helped and here I was with the award!

What values have you learnt from your parents and teachers?

My teachers and parents have been extremely helpful. All through, the teachers motivated me if I was feeling dejected; they supported me and told me that I was capable of achieving great heights. My parents have taught me the importance of discipline.

Why is discipline necessary?

Everything is associated with it. Discipline brings structure to your life. As a student, it is very important since everything needs to be done properly. For instance, you have to study at a specific time, go out and play, and make time for extracurricular activities for holistic development. If there is no discipline, there is no way you can follow time management.

What is the one thing that stands out from Dr Stya Paul’s life?

His selfless service to others and the fact that he set up Apeejay Education so that students like myself can get fantastic education with overall personality development.
