TalesOfTradition: ‘This school feels like family’

His children, Bhavya and Jatin, are in Class II, and Mokshith is in Class V at Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad. But what makes this family stand out is that they have been associated with the school since 1973! His eldest sister took admission that year. He is the youngest of five siblings, and all of them studied in the same school. Meet Deepak Sikka, who joined in school in 1983-84 and graduated in 1997.

In an impromptu interview, he shares a memory that has stayed with him.

What made you choose this school for your children?

The school feels like family. All of us siblings studied here. When I was in school, I received a sports scholarship, so I know the school takes complete care of its children. It focuses on overall development, not just academics. Whether it is studies, sports, or co-curricular activities, the school supports children fully. That is why I wanted my children to study here.

Is there a memory from your school days that has stayed with you?

Definitely the teachers and the Principal back then. We also have very fond memories of our Founder-Chairman, Dr Stya Paul sir. My sister even has photographs with him from Sports Day events. We met him personally during that time.

Since you met Dr Stya Paul, is there something about him that stood out to you?

He had a very positive aura. Even being around him made you feel it. He was extremely down-to-earth, disciplined, and punctual. During Sports Day, if the event started at 8 am, he would be there by 7.50 am. He never came late, despite being the Founder-Chairman.

A value that still guides you today.

The school motto, Soaring High Is My Nature, has stayed with me. I still try to excel in life with that motto in mind. It has guided me since my school days.

What makes the school the right place for your children?

The school does not focus only on studies. It gives equal importance to co-curricular activities like dance, stage performances, sports, and weekly activities. My son and daughters regularly participate in dance, recitation, and competitions. The school genuinely nurtures children.

When you visit the school now, what feels familiar and what feels different?

The infrastructure feels familiar. The building, sports ground, and basketball court all remain the same. What has changed are the teachers, as many from our time have moved on. However, I still meet some teachers I know personally from those days.

What experience from your school life would you want your children to have?

I want them to nurture themselves. The school gives them opportunities to develop their skills. They should excel in whatever they are good at. The school does not force children into a fixed path. It allows them to grow based on their interests.

Where do you see a reflection of yourself in your children?

I want them to excel in their interests. I was good at sports. My eldest son is good at basketball. My daughter is good at dance. The school allows them to pursue and practice what they love.
