The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has established a 35-member committee to develop syllabi and teaching-learning material for History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, and Psychology for classes VI to XII.

The Curricular Area Group (CAG) for Social Science, chaired by Michel Danino, a visiting professor at IIT-Gandhinagar, is a continuation of the 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC). NSTC, formed in July, was tasked with finalising the curriculum, textbooks, and learning material for the specified classes.

NSTC was expected to create at least 11 CAGs in various subject domains. At present, CAGs have been formed for innovative pedagogy, teaching-learning material, Indian Knowledge System (IKS), and Social Sciences.

The Social Science CAG will coordinate with the Preparatory Stage CAG and other CAGs, ensuring continuity with classes III-V, interdisciplinary connections among subjects, and the integration of cross-cutting themes in Social Science.

To foster integration across disciplines in Social Sciences, both the CAGs for Social Science and Economics will share and discuss drafts of material with each other. The committee includes members such as Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, and Banabina Brahma, Associate Professor at Kokrajhar Government College, Assam, among others. The deadline for submitting Handbooks for Teachers to NSTC and NCERT is February 25, 2024.
