Guiding future initiatives for adolescents’ well-being

To help students better understand the changes that come with growing up, Apeejay School, Nerul, organised an Adolescence Education Programme (AEP). Held in the school’s Multipurpose Hall, the session was designed for students of Class IX. The aim was to create a safe space for learning and conversations around adolescent development.

The event was presided over by Principal Mr P Subhash, Vice-principal Ms Preety Gupta, and Academic Coordinator Ms Shakuntala Singh. The facilitators were Dr Monika Gupta, Ms Samita Vij, and Ms Namita Mer (School Counsellor). Addressing the gathering, the Principal urged students to respect elders, reduce screen time, and develop the confidence to speak up for themselves. He reminded the audience that the young minds sitting in front of him were the nation’s most valuable resource, future leaders who must learn to make wise choices.

A walk through adolescence

Dr Gupta welcomed the students and introduced the day’s facilitator, Ms Mer, who took students through the journey of adolescence. Her session covered a range of key topics in an open, engaging manner. From understanding physical changes like puberty and hygiene, to tackling emotional stress and developing resilience, Ms Mer explained it all clearly. She helped students recognise the importance of setting boundaries in relationships and resisting peer pressure. The talk also focused on goal setting, decision making, and planning for the future — skills that will serve students well beyond the classroom.

A crucial aspect of the session was health education. Students learned about good nutrition, the importance of exercise, the dangers of substance abuse, and the basics of sexual health.

An interactive and impactful session

The session ended with an open Q&A. Students asked thoughtful questions, and Ms Mer, along with Dr Gupta, addressed them with clarity and warmth. Many participants shared that they felt more aware, reassured, and ready to face the challenges of this stage in life.

To reinforce these lessons, the school has planned an Intra-class competition among the four Class IX sections. The topics will focus on peer pressure, risk-taking behaviour, bullying, and social media impact — key concerns of adolescence.

The AEP was more than just a session at Apeejay School, Nerul. It was a meaningful step towards helping students grow into confident, informed, and responsible individuals.
