Apeejay’s design students learn about contemporary and modern art

Students of School of Design & Visual Arts participate in Delhi Art Week -a journey of learning and inspiration

Enriching field trip experiences are crucial for design students as they provide real-world exposure, inspire creativity, and offer practical insights. These trips help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, fostering a deeper understanding of design principles and enhancing their overall learning and professional preparedness.

The School of Design & Visual Arts at Apeejay Stya University (ASU) believes in providing such holistic experiences to its students. Budding designers from the school had an enriching experience of participating in Delhi Art Week, a significant event in the art world that showcases contemporary and modern art.

This visit aimed to provide practical learning experiences that complement their academic studies, focusing on key learning outcomes such as exposure to diverse art forms, interaction with art professionals, and practical insights into exhibition design.

Objectives and Learning Outcomes

Exposure to Contemporary and Modern Art: The primary objective of participating in Delhi Art Week was to immerse students in a wide array of contemporary and modern artworks. By viewing these diverse pieces, students enhanced their understanding and appreciation of different art forms and styles. This exposure is crucial in broadening their artistic perspectives and inspiring their creative processes.

Interaction with Art Professionals: Another significant aspect of the visit was the opportunity to engage with various art professionals, including artists, curators, and art critics. These interactions provided students with valuable insights into the professional art world, helping them understand the dynamics and challenges of a career in art. Networking with these professionals also offered practical advice and potential mentorship opportunities.

Practical Learning Experience: Observing the presentation and curation of art in renowned galleries allowed students to understand the nuances of exhibition design and display, which are critical components of their curriculum. This hands-on learning experience is vital in equipping them with the skills needed for future careers in art curation and exhibition design.

Two-day experience
The first day included visits to the National Gallery of Modern Art and Bikaner House (Zone One). Students were accompanied by Dr. Tikendra Kumar Sahu, Ms. Megha Shisodiya, and Mr. Vikash. The day was filled with exploring modern art installations and exhibitions that provided a deeper understanding of contemporary art practices.

On the second day, students visited the Kiran Nadar Museum (Zone Three), accompanied by Dr. Tikendra Kumar Sahu and Ms. Swati Atreya. This visit focused on modern art collections and curatorial practices, further enhancing students’ knowledge and appreciation of art curation.

Benefits and Future Implications

Participation in Delhi Art Week has significantly broadened the horizons of students from the School of Design and Visual Arts. The practical insights gained during this event are crucial for their academic and professional growth. The exposure to high-quality art, coupled with direct interactions with professionals, has provided a comprehensive learning experience that extends beyond traditional classroom education.

Faculty members ensured that the students had a structured and enriching experience throughout the art week. This initiative aligns with Apeejay Stya University’s commitment to providing holistic education that prepares students for real-world challenges and opportunities in the art world.

All in all, the participation of Apeejay Stya University’s design students in Delhi Art Week has proven to be a transformative experience. It not only enhanced their academic learning but also inspired them to pursue their artistic ambitions with renewed vigor and creativity. Such initiatives underscore the importance of integrating practical experiences with academic curricula to foster well-rounded and capable professionals in the field of art and design.
