Chocolate has the power to elevate any dessert into a delicious indulgence, simply by adding richness and some indulgent flavor that never fails to impress the sweet tooths out there. Then comes something special: World Chocolate Day is celebrated every year on July 7.

It is a day marking the universal popularity of chocolate and the comfort it brings to people around the globe. What’s best about chocolate, whether dark, milk, or white, is the fact that it can make any simple ingredient or dish a true gastronomic delight. You can celebrate this day simply by indulging in your favorite chocolate bar or creating new recipes in which to feature chocolate’s appeal in various forms.

Why is it celebrated?

The day commemorates the arrival of chocolate in Europe in the 1550s. Originating from the cacao bean, chocolate boasts a rich history rooted in ancient Mesoamerican cultures. Over the centuries, it has transformed from a bitter beverage into the sweet treat we cherish today, becoming an integral part.

Over the years, chocolate has ended up with a bad rap, as it contains fat and is therefore energy-dense. Let’s discover myths associated with having chocolate.

Myth 1: Chocolates can make you gain more weight!

Fact: It’s a common belief that chocolates can make you fat. However, dark chocolates are packed with beneficial nutrients such as antioxidants, magnesium, zinc, calcium, protein, and phosphate, all of which support overall health and aid in detoxification. May doctors have advised the consumption of chocolate every once in a while. Chocolate doesn’t necessarily lead to weight gain or fat accumulation. Indulging in chocolates in moderation can be a healthy and enjoyable part of your diet.

Myth 2: Diabetics are not allowed to consume chocolates

Fact: Many mistakenly believe that people with diabetes must eliminate chocolate from their diet. However, this isn’t true, and many have unnecessarily missed out on this treat. According to the British Heart Foundation, individuals with diabetes can enjoy chocolate in moderation as part of a healthy diet. It’s recommended to avoid so-called diabetes-friendly chocolate products found in stores, as they often contain high levels of fat, which can lead to spikes in blood glucose levels.

Myth 3: Chocolates contribute to cavities

Fact: From childhood, we all have heard the saying that eating too many chocolates will lead to teeth cavities’. The fact is, It’s not the chocolate itself, but the starch in processed chocolate products combined with mouth bacteria, that causes cavities. However, a report has indicated that consuming chocolate in moderation does not harm your teeth or body. It is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene, brush after consuming sweets, and choose low-sugar chocolate options to help prevent cavities.

Myth 4: Dark chocolate reigns as the healthier choice over milk chocolate

Fact: While dark chocolate generally boasts more antioxidants and less sugar than its milk counterpart, not all dark chocolates are created equal. The health merits of dark chocolate hinge on factors like cacao content, processing methods, and ingredient quality. For maximum health benefits, opt for dark chocolate crafted from raw cacao, a potent antioxidant superfood, and ensure it contains at least 65% cacao content.

Myth 5: Chocolate causes acne

Fact: Despite circulating myths, research confirms no specific connection between chocolate consumption and acne. Acne is primarily influenced by factors like genetics and hormones, rather than by eating chocolate.

On this World Chocolate Day 2024, regardless of any terminology you may prefer — whether it’s weight inclusive, body positive, body neutral, or another, what matters most is fostering compassion and embracing diversity, regardless of body type. Indulge in that beloved piece of chocolate without overthinking it. Let your taste buds savour the moment of pure delight!
