As businesses embrace automation, data dashboards, and AI-driven hiring tools, one department is holding tight to the very thing that made it essential in the first place – the human touch.
Modern HR practices may look sleek and systemised, but at their core, they still revolve around people. Behind every onboarding process, diversity initiative, or performance review lies a deeper need: to understand the person behind the employee ID. This is where the human element in human resources becomes not just important – but irreplaceable.
Empathy in HR: The most timeless skill
Technology can analyse performance trends, but it can’t spot burnout in a quiet employee. It can screen résumés, but it can’t detect the anxiety of a new hire on their first day. For that, you need empathy.
“Every employee has their own iceberg,” says Nidhi Choudhary, Human Resource Business Partner at HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited & Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri alumna, who brings over 14 years of experience across industries like oil & energy, manufacturing, and chemicals.

“What you see on the surface is just the job role. But what’s underneath their fears, motivations, challenges needs to be understood with care. That’s where HR truly steps in.”
As workplaces become more diverse and dynamic, HR professionals are being called upon not just to manage people, but to truly connect with them. The ability to listen, counsel, and respond with sensitivity is becoming central to HR trends across sectors.
People-first in a process-heavy world
Most modern HR systems are built around structured processes – leave policies, appraisal cycles, feedback forms. But these are only effective when employees trust the people behind the policies.
“At the end of the day, you can’t Google empathy,” says Nidhi. “You have to live it. Especially in HR.”
From handling workplace grievances to mentoring future leaders, Nidhi’s career highlights the shift from administrative HR to strategic, people-first leadership. Her work also involves leading DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) efforts and employee well-being initiatives at a 2200-acre refinery plant – roles that demand not just expertise, but emotional intelligence.
Why the ‘human’ still matters in HR trends
HR is also often the first and last touchpoint for an employee in an organisation – from recruitment to exit. This makes the human element non-negotiable. It’s what ensures employees feel valued, heard, and supported through every stage of their journey
