The ten-day festival begins on the fourth day of the month of Bhadrapada in the Hindu calendar and involves bringing home idols of Ganesha, performing daily rituals, making offerings of favourite sweets like modaks, and culminating in a grand procession where the idols are immersed in water on the final day, Ananta Chaturdashi. The festival was transformed into a major public event by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893, making it a significant symbol of unity and nationalism in India.
