Friendship Day is celebrated to highlight the importance of friendship. It is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. People celebrate the day by giving gifts, sending messages, and spending time together. It was first celebrated in the US in 1935. Over time the day became popular and other countries started celebrating the day too. Friendship Day is dedicated to friends and to making our lives meaningful.

To be a good friend, you have to be loyal, honest, trustworthy, and kind. As Albert Camus once said – “Do not walk in front of me, I may not follow, do not walk behind me, I may not lead, walk beside me and be my friend.” Friendship is a bond everyone can enjoy. Sometimes we fight, but that does not break our wonderful friendship. On this day, young and old, poor and rich from all over the world, celebrate the day. Even though it comes once a year, we have friends forever.
By the valuable role they play in our lifetime, they truly deserve to get a day dedicated to just them, that celebrates friendship. On this, friends make cards and give each other sweets and chocolates or any other way they like. Fathers and mothers go out with their friends too, as friendship lasts forever. Children go to shops and buy things for their friends with their pocket money, in fact the shopkeepers have to restock their shelves very often! Many people also show their love and gratitude by making handmade gifts like friendship bands for their lovely friends. Many countries including India celebrate Friendship Day, and days before that, friends start planning for it.
My parents always told me to choose my friends wisely, as there are both bad and good people in the world, and some might be fake friends. A true friend is one who is honest, even if the truth is bitter. Also, a friend is a friend in need, to bring out the best in you. I celebrate Friendship Day by giving my friends gifts and sweets. I also never got fake friends because of my parents’ advice. Before I had no friends, as I was a shy and timid child, but then I grew brave and made some good friends. My best friend always cared for me, when I was hurt and there was nobody around and I do the same for her.
Friendship Day’s main aim is to show how important friends are. You can do anything to show friends that you care for them. Perhaps make a cake or get a friendship bracelet. But no matter what you do, a true friend will appreciate it. Happy Friendship Day!
