Nestled in the picturesque hills of Tripura, Unakoti is a hidden gem that combines historical significance with natural beauty. This ancient pilgrimage site, located around 178 kilometers from Agartala, is famous for its rock carvings and stone images, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and spiritual seekers alike.
The name “Unakoti” translates to “one less than a crore” in Bengali, which refers to the mythological story that there were a crore (10 million) gods and goddesses created here, but one was short. This site is a treasure trove of ancient art and culture, with rock-cut images and sculptures dating back to the 7th–9th century, attributed to the Koch dynasty.

The most iconic feature of Unakoti is the giant rock carvings, especially the monumental figure of Lord Shiva, known as Kailashnath. Standing at a height of around 30 feet, this image is one of the largest rock carvings of Lord Shiva in India. The site also features numerous carvings of deities, animals, and human figures, showcasing the artistry and spiritual heritage of the region.
Apart from its cultural significance, Unakoti is also renowned for its scenic surroundings, with lush greenery, rolling hills, and serene landscapes, making it a peaceful place to explore. The natural beauty of the area, coupled with the spiritual aura of the place, offers visitors a chance to experience the perfect blend of nature and history.
Unakoti is a less-explored destination, which adds to its charm. It provides a unique opportunity to discover a hidden chapter of Northeast India’s rich cultural and spiritual history. For those seeking to delve into ancient Indian art or looking for a quiet nature retreat, Unakoti is the perfect place to visit.
