‘Treasured years at this school yielded in lasting lessons’

Himanshu Dhanda, a remarkable prodigy and 2015 alumnus of Apeejay School, Saket, is dedicating his life to ground-breaking research on cancer, one of the world’s deadliest diseases. Driven by a deep desire to make a tangible difference, he aspires to discover a cure that could save countless lives and benefit humanity at large. In an exclusive interview, he shares his vision of becoming the world’s leading researcher, combining scientific excellence with social responsibility. His unwavering commitment, passion for knowledge, and determination to give back to society make his journey truly inspiring and exemplary.

 Share something about your professional journey and current research.

It has been 11 years since I graduated from the school, in 2015. Since then, my academic path led me through a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree (BSc and MSc) at Amity University, followed by qualifying for the CSIR NET fellowship. At present, I am in the final year of my PhD, pursuing cancer research at an ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) institute. My research focus is on Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, specifically investigating the PI3K-mTOR signalling pathway. My primary objective is to identify reliable biomarkers that can facilitate the early diagnosis and prognosis of patients suffering from leukaemia. My ultimate goal is to become an established researcher in the academic sector, contributing work that improves the quality of life for patients and provides tangible benefits to society.

How has AI redefined modern medicine?

The field of medical research is being revolutionized by Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI-driven prediction models and machine learning are now capable of analysing vast amounts of clinical data to predict patient outcomes with high accuracy. These tools are becoming indispensable for doctors, as they can assist in diagnosing conditions by analysing X-rays, MRIs, and other complex medical reports. AI has also become a valuable asset in scientific writing. In the final stages of my PhD, where I am focused on publishing research papers globally, AI tools help ensure linguistic accuracy and assist in creating professional presentations, which are a vital part of the doctoral journey.

Share your favourite nostalgia from school.

I remember those years as some of the most inspiring of my life. The school culture, led by our Principal, and Vice-principal, consistently motivated us to strive for excellence. I was deeply involved in extracurricular activities, participating in the school choir, the art team, and various Inter-school competitions and Annual Appreciation Days. I spent much of my time in the art room, and at one point, I even envisioned a future as an artist. I am also profoundly grateful to the teachers who shaped my personality. Beyond the classroom, school provided the foundation for lifelong friendships bonds that remain strong even a decade later.

Any advice to the current generation at school?

I encourage you to cherish these years, as they are among the most significant you will ever experience. While the academic competition may feel intense, take pride in your achievements, no matter how minor they may seem at the time. Most importantly, respect your teachers. Education is a collaborative process; as they guide your development, they are also growing alongside you. If you treat them with kindness and respect, they will invest their heart and soul into your growth and success. Enjoy every moment, every assembly, and every festival these memories will stay with you forever.
