Education is the right of every child. However, sadly, many children from low-income families hardly get an opportunity to attend school. Even if they get themselves enrolled in a school, they often drop out in a few years to support their families’ living.
Thus, to promote basic education for all, Government, non-profit organisations and many volunteers are joining hands to give each child in this country a chance to attend a quality school that teaches, prepares, and encourages them to follow their dreams. In addition to education, children who are in most need are also provided with basic facilities like food, shelter, and educational material.
One such initiative was initiated by the student members of Rotaract Club of Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram. Recently, they organised a two-day campaign ‘Aashayein Phase- II,’ for the poor kids of Prayas NGO, Tughlakabad.
During the first day of visit, the students organised many activities like self defence and taekwondo tactics. They also taught the children basic mathematical solving tricks; yoga and meditation; good touch and bad touch. In addition, basic art and craft skills and DIY activities were conducted on the second day.
Dr Vijay Kumar, Associate Professor of the School of Education, was the faculty coordinator of this campaign. Chandrajeet Dhara was the student coordinator for the event.
While expressing his views about this programme, Chandrajeet Dhara said, “The impact of the activities conducted for the students was incredible and watching them smile was very peaceful. The kids really enjoyed the time and wanted the activities to continue. I believe every child in this society should receive education and that’s my only motto.”
Another student, Fardeen Siddiqui, who is also the Creative Head of Rotaract Club said, “My experience was very good, I was really connected with the children of the NGO. To increase the art skills of the kids, I taught them about line work, point work, cartoon colouring and also gave them many tasks to perform.”
He further added, “On the next day of the campaign, I found them very curious to learn more. I gave them more tasks like nature picture colouring, fruit colouring, and helped them with jumble work activities. They all completed their tasks with joy and happiness. I would say it was a great experience for me and I will always cherish these 2 days in my life.”
Ayush Das, pursuing B.Tech Computer Science expressed, “This was my first visit to an orphanage and teaching the kids about fine arts and math was very special. Every moment spent with them is now a precious memory. I am glad that I could bring smiles on their faces by providing them knowledge. The teachers of the orphanage were very supportive. I wish all the kids of the orphanage a very safe and bright future.”
To acknowledge the efforts, students who participated in the event were given participation certificates and 5 community hours were credited to their final report.
