You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind
– Mahatma Gandhi
This quote from Mahatma Gandhi captures the unyielding spirit of Indian freedom fighters, a spirit that Apeejay School Nerul embodied in their celebration of the 78th Independence Day of India this year. On August 15 the assembly courtyard of the school came alive with national pride and reminiscences of history, as the school fraternity celebrated Independence Day. It was not an event that brought the feeling of memories regarding the freedom fighters of India but echoed with the immortal words of Mahatma Gandhi as well.
A Somber Start
The day’s activities commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by the Principal, Mr P Subhash, in front of the school’s students, teachers and parents who came to attend. This flag-hoisting ceremony, held to the national anthem, is an eternal reminder of the hard road India took toward its freedom and of the oneness that forms the backdrop of today’s India.
From Vision to Responsibility
Right after the flag salute, the audience was privileged to be entertained by a series of speeches beginning with the welcome address. The speakers reflected almost the same ideas presented by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in his freedom speech way back in 1947. This year, under the theme Viksit Bharat, celebrations are targeting the filling of the local community with visions of India transforming into a developed nation by 2047.
The Principal spoke of those who helped shape the destiny of India and Indian values: unity, diversity, and resilience for continuous strength. He pointedly called upon the students to achieve excellence and uphold values of patriotism, compassion, and integrity.
Voices of the Future
The cultural dimension was further added with the speeches of four students in Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, and English. Each speech remembered and dreamed of India, carried forward from history and rolled into the promises of the future. Those lines spoke of growing India, unity, and hope for a world power in the coming century.
This entire ceremony gained further impetus from the children of classes I and II, who came in front of everyone and sang with glee Jai Jawan and मेरा मुल्क मेरा देश. It not only instilled patriotism but was an epitome of the rich cultural tapestry of India.
The best items were in the form of dance dramas portraying the struggles and triumphs of great personalities such as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Veer Savarkar. The whole thing finally culminated with a tribute to Bharat Mata and left the audience with an emotional and inspiring note.
Glimmer of a Resplendent Tomorrow
क्रांति की मशाल से is a rhythmic song with all the feelings of revolution and growth that India has gone through. The school choir sang this, and enchanting voices reverberated in the courtyard as the programmes ended. Not only does this song rejoice at the fighting spirit of those heroes of the nation but also reminds all that this journey towards a more prosperous and equitable India is still on.
The function ended with the ensemble playing Vande Mataram to present a most inspiring finale to a day of national pride and cultural introspection. The Vote of Thanks cited how everybody had put in effort towards the buildup of the memory of the event and its conclusion with the feeling of collective effort towards nation-building.
The Independence Day celebration at Apeejay School, Nerul, was more than an event; it was imbued with a sense of those values that go on to define India — patriotism, unity, and an unflinching spirit of freedom. This indomitable spirit has seen them through this courtyard and will go with them to take their place in the building of a new, better nation.
