Sports have always been an integral part of education, shaping individuals into disciplined, confident, and well-rounded personalities. Recognising the transformative power of sports, Apeejay School, Nerul organised the Annual Sports Week to inspire students to engage in physical activities, foster teamwork, and embrace a spirit of healthy competition. This grand event is not merely a showcase of athletic talent but a celebration of the values and principles that sports instil – perseverance, resilience, leadership, and respect for others.

The Sports Week however was much more than a set of competitions; it was a festival of energy, enthusiasm, and unity. The event provided students with a platform to discover their physical capabilities. It is a time when classrooms extend beyond walls to the open fields, and the lessons of discipline and cooperation are learnt under the sunlit sky.

The Sports Week celebration at Apeejay School, Nerul, held from November 23 to November 30, was an exhilarating and unforgettable event. Designed to promote the holistic development of students, this week serves as a reminder of the integral role sports play in fostering physical fitness, mental well-being, and social harmony. It is an opportunity for students to showcase their talents, build character, and embrace the values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.

The final day of the Sports Week began with the flag hoisting and the school song, symbolising unity and patriotism. A hearty homage was paid to Dr Stya Paul, Founder-Chairman, Apeejay Stya and Svran Group. This was followed by an invocation dance performed by secondary section students.

The school warmly welcomed its distinguished guests, including Mrs Abhilasha Mhatre, Deputy Commissioner of NMMC, an Arjuna Awardee athlete and the former Captain of the Indian Kabaddi women’s team and Mrs Bindu Prasad, former Captain of the Indian Women’s football team. Other notable guests included Mr R.H. Gurav, a DSO officer in Navi Mumbai, a national-level volleyball player and coach of the Indian shooting volleyball team and Ms Nidhi Shetty, an alumna of the school and an ace national-level swimmer.

The event commenced with a vibrant march past by students representing the four schoolhouses: Nalanda, Takshashila, Ujjain, and Vikramshila. The synchronisation and discipline on display earned applause from the audience. The lighting of the sports torch, followed by the solemn oath-taking ceremony, marked the formal opening of the Sports Week.

Principal, Mr P.S. Subhash delivered an inspiring speech, emphasising the significance of sports as a competency-based skill that fosters resilience and citizenship. He paid tribute to Dr Stya Paul and expressed his gratitude to Mrs Sushma Paul Berlia, Chairman, Apeejay Education, Chairman, Apeejay Stya and Svran Group, Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University and Chairperson, Apeejay School, Nerul and Mr Nishant Berlia, Co-Promoter Apeejay Stya and Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University; Mr Aditya Berlia, Co-Promoter of Apeejay Stya and Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University; and Dr Neha Berlia, Co-Promoter of Apeejay Stya & Svran Group and Pro-Chancellor of Apeejay Stya University for their support and guidance.

The Chief Guest highlighted the role of sports in character building and encouraged students to practice hard and also motivated parents to support their children’s interests in athletics. The Guest of Honor inspired students by giving them a very relatable example by asking them to emulate Lionel Messi’s perseverance and dedication, urging them to stay focused and overcome challenges. Ms Shetty, honoured guest and alumna, expressed gratitude to the school for its foundational support and encouraged students to believe in themselves in every situation.

Throughout the week, a variety of events and games were organised, catering to diverse interests and age groups. The students enthusiastically participated in track and field events like races (50m, 100m, 200m, 1500m, and relays), long jump, and standing broad jump. Throw events like shot put and discus throw tested their strength and precision. Additionally, fun activities like tug-of-war and hurdle races added an element of excitement and enjoyment to the event. These activities not only showcased the students’ athletic talents but also promoted teamwork and sportsmanship across all age groups.

Cultural performances by the Taekwondo and Aerobics teams added to the grandeur of the event. Pre-primary and Primary students performed vibrant dances to the widely acclaimed song Waving Flag, while captivating sports displays enthralled the audience. On the final day, thrilling races and relays marked the culmination of a week of athletic fervour. The Pre-primary students delighted everyone with unique races like the Rabbit Race, Red Riding Hood Race, and Obstacle Course Race.
