Sarthak Gupta is a second-year MBA student at Apeejay School of Management (ASM). He has recently completed his internship at DefinEquity Pvt Ltd, an equity research and product intelligence firm. In a quick interview, the equity research intern speaks about his passion, time at ASM and what makes this field so unique.
Read edited excerpts:
Tell us about your experience at the internship?
It involved a lot of work. I had to first help the team leader to generate the equity research reports. I also had to analyse a particular stock or the macro-economic trends in the market. Then we interns were given more work related to that.
Was this internship in sync with your career goal?
I aspire to be an equity research analyst and my college helped me to get a brilliant internship in this field. What makes this field so fascinating is that equity research is not confined to only one subject. It is a finance domain, yet one has to study the business models of different companies. One has to also be good in economics to be in this industry. One has to master many subjects and have comprehensive knowledge.
How has the MBA experience been at ASM?

It has been quite fruitful. I find the infrastructure at the college extremely well equipped and the teachers very cooperative. When teachers are cooperative, students feel comfortable interacting with them. At this level, we need the mentorship and guidance from teachers, more than anything else. This is the time we make or break our careers. And I find good guidance at ASM. All the teachers are experienced in the corporate world and they guide us well.
One key skill needed to be an equity researcher?
One needs to read a lot and stay updated. One has to study the business models of different companies in detail. I worked on a project that needed me to study the business model of a hospital. It was very interesting, as I had never thought I would read about this being a finance student. I also did a project for a client who wanted to establish a cigar project in India. I had to study the business plan for that too in detail.
What are your future targets?
Get a job in my domain with a decent package. I am not running after a top package as of now. I want to get into my target profile i.e. equity research first. However, on a long term basis I would look for a well payin
