Shakespeare had famously written in Hamlet, “Joys come as single spies and sorrows come in battalions.” However, if we tweak this saying slightly, it fits perfectly in the case of Zayan Askari.

When it comes to talents, they arrive in battalions for this remarkable young artist. Already a gifted poet, Zayan continues to dazzle everyone with his extraordinary art skills. Selected as this week’s Apeejay Aspiring Artist, let’s dive into the artistic world of this wonder kid.

Zayan! Since when did you start drawing?

I started drawing when I was about six years old. Over the years, it has grown from a simple hobby into a passion. I just love art so much.

So which art form do you connect with the most?

I enjoy architectural art the most because it combines precision with creativity. I love exploring the beauty of historical structures like the Alhambra palace in Grenada, Spain. My current set of artwork focuses on the intricate jaaliwork found across the Alhambra Palace.

And how does your school encourage you as an artist?

My school encourages artistic expression by organizing exhibitions, competitions, and providing platforms like the school newsroom to showcase our talents. This support motivates me to keep improving my skills.

Great! So what’s art for you?

Art transcends language. It’s about conveying emotions, ideas, and stories through creative mediums. It’s one of the most beautiful forms of expression.

Now take us through your process, ideas, and themes.

It usually takes me a week to complete an artwork, depending on its complexity. My themes often revolve around historical architecture, nature, and cultural heritage. I feel inspired by the art I encounter, whether in monuments or everyday objects.

Upcoming artworks?

I’m planning to create a series on famous landmarks, with my next piece focusing on the Taj Mahal’s architecture. I also want to work on an art series inspired by the marvellous Meenakshi Temple in Madurai.

One new art form you wish to learn?

I’d love to learn digital art. It offers endless possibilities and would allow me to experiment with new styles and techniques.

Other hobbies apart from art?

Apart from art, I enjoy reading, playing sports, and exploring history through books and documentaries.
