Sanchit Gupta is a gifted poet studying in class 7 at Apeejay School, Model Town, Jalandhar. He has written a very suitable poem for the current times: Summers. Inspired or affected by the unbearable heat, the young boy tries his hand at a fun poem on Indian summers that might give some metaphorical relief to the readers.
Selected as this week’s Promising Poet, let us see what the budding poet has to say about his craft. Read edited excerpts:
Sanchit, did the 52 Celsius heat wave inspire your poem ‘Summer‘?
Yes, it did! (laughs) This is the first time the temperature is so high in the month of May. It is unbearably hot. So, I thought of writing a fun poem on the topic of summer, as a hopeful relief.
Great thought! So do you follow any poets on social media?
Yes, I listen to poems written by the great Indian poet Kalidasa on YouTube. There are many interesting videos on his poems.

That’s interesting to know! So, how does your school motivate and support you to write poems?
My school teachers support me very well by teaching me poetic devices as well as explaining to me different poems in depth and helping me to understand their meaning clearly.
And writing poems in the day or night?
Whenever I get time and the right mood, I write!
So what new poems have you’ve written since the previous interview?
I have written a few poems since my last interview. I have written a poem on Shiv ji, on Ramayana and even a horror haunted house themed poem.
Any new poetry styles you’ve learnt?
I am just trying to polish my rhyming skills!
Very nice! Any new books that inspired you?
I have done a lot of reading since my last interview. I have read two parts of the Harry Potter series, Mahabharata and some other great reads on Hindu mythology.
Lastly, your next poem will be on…?
I am writing a poem on the life of Hanuman Ji. It is titled Pavan Putra : The tales of Hanuman.
