The day to honour unheralded heroes

World Father’s Day– a day of commemoration for the incredible influence fathers and father figures have on our lives. Whether they are silent sponsors or extroverted cheerleaders, fathers serve a diverse array of purposes, molding personalities, offering advice, and providing unconditional love. 

Fathers play a significant role in families and society. They are the breadwinners, guardians, and usually the initial instructors, sharing critical life lessons, making us aware of the importance of self-discipline, and imparting a sense of security. 

In a more complicated situation, the father’s role has spread beyond the stereotypes. Modern fathers are engaged in childcare, domestic work, and emotional support, eroding obsolete gender roles and adopting a more balanced partnership in the family structure. They attend school plays, serve as coaches to the sports teams, and provide a comforting shoulder for their child to cry on; their engagement has taken on a new intensity, breaking through all the stereotypes made during the previous years.

World Father’s Day reminds us to celebrate the fathers who have been our heroes, mentors, and friends. It is a time to look back on the sacrifices of the fathers, the guidance they offer, and the unconditional love they share. An acknowledging phone call, a heartfelt letter, a meal together, or a gift is enough, perhaps, to show our gratitude on this day.

Outside of individual families, the observance of Father’s Day also points to the wider societal value of positive role models among men. Fathers, grandfathers, uncles, mentors, and even older brothers who assume a fatherly figure help make well-adjusted individuals and more balanced communities. Their influence is evident in the positive changes they foster: the values they instill, the resilience they cultivate, and the aspirations they ignite in the youth.

Ultimately, World Father’s Day is a celebration of love, dedication, and the irreplaceable bond between a father and child. It’s an opportunity to pause, appreciate, and express our heartfelt thanks to the men who have helped shape us into who we are today.  

Therefore, this Father’s Day, let us take time to respect the fathers and father figures in our lives and recognise the precious contribution they make to our world to become a better place. Happy Father’s Day!
