Today, everyone has become self-centred – “I, Me, and Myself” oriented. Many of them even believe that self-care is the way to achieving personal fulfilment and success at work and in life. It is under such an attitude that acts of kindness, empathy, and humility shine out and deserve the highest recognition.

Hence, schools like Apeejay Education celebrate this act by conferring the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values, one of the most prestigious awards given to students who exhibit and live by core human values. This annual award is presented to the students who are consistently exhibiting these values in their behaviour, conduct, and actions and setting an outstanding example for others.

Meet one such student, Armaan Ali, a student of class X (now Class XI) at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. In a candid interview, he discusses the human values he cherishes.

How thrilled were you when you found out you’d been selected?

I didn’t know until I received the award. I had no warning that I would be selected for this coveted award. So, yes, I was very excited when they called me up on stage.

Did you expect there was a chance you might win?

When they first called me for the interview, I thought something might be happening. I was hoping for something, but not this award. I was never told that they were selecting students for the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values! It was mentioned they were shortlisting students for something. Therefore, expecting to get this award was never on the cards until the last day.

Can you tell me about a question from the test that stood out to you?

There was a question in the written test that asked, “Which one incident in your life has inspired you to show human values in your overall nature?” I wrote about a time when I went to buy groceries. I intended to buy something for Rs 50, but the retailer accidentally gave me more items than was due. On my way home, I realised the mistake, so I went back to return the extra items, even though I was almost home.

What aspect of Dr Stya Paul inspires you the most?

His simplicity. We were once told that Dr Stya Paul used to speak humbly with everyone and didn’t look down on anyone, nor did he differentiate among people because of their caste, creed or gender. I find that very inspiring.

How would you define human values?

Human values are essential for everyone. Our school has even started incorporating them into the curriculum, which is great because they improve our personality and how we interact with others.

How do you maintain positive values despite the negativity around you?

Honestly, that’s something I’ve faced a lot. Friends often ask why I don’t use any kind of abusive language, which is common. I tell them it’s because of what my parents taught me. I remember their teachings and try to live by them, avoiding negative language.

What values have you learned from your parents and school?

My parents have always taught me to be humble and honest, and to think before I speak. I try to live by these values. Our school emphasises discipline, like being punctual and attending classes regularly. It’s helped me develop a disciplined attitude, which I find very valuable.

How important is discipline in a student’s life, especially with the upcoming Board exams?

Discipline is extremely important. You have to commit to whatever plan you have to be successful. Right now, I’m focusing a lot on my studies, and discipline is helping me stay on track.
