Kurash is more than just a sport; it is a pathway to physical fitness, mental strength, and personal growth, believes this 16-year-old. Meet Wasil Mahdi, at present, studying in class IX at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park. In a candid interview, he shares his rigid training schedule that brings him wins.

Tell us about your recent achievements in Kurash.

After coming second in the zonal matches, I felt I could do better and decided to challenge myself further. With the support of my mentor, I entered the state-level competition and was fortunate to achieve fourth place.

How did Apeejay School support your journey?

It’s my school that has provided me with this wonderful opportunity under the guidance of my mentor. She saw my hidden potential and diverted my interest to judo and kurash. It’s her training, guidance, belief in me and unbeatable supervision that I came out with such flying colours.

Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration is my coach and mentor. Her dedication, guidance, and unwavering support have shaped me into who I am today. She motivates me to push my limits, work hard, and strive for excellence, both in sports and life. Her belief in me inspires me to overcome challenges and achieve my goals.

Share your training regime.

I wake up at 5:30 am daily and reach school at 7 am for my sports coaching, where I do warm-up exercises and daily routine practice.

Would you like to take up judo professionally?

While I am passionate about judo, taking it up professionally is something I will decide in the future. At present, my main focus is on preparing for my class IX final exams and the upcoming challenges of class X. Balancing academics and sports is important to me, and I aim to excel in both areas before making a final decision.

Any special diet you follow?

Nothing specific. But one thing I always take care of is my pre-workout and post-workout food and during the matches, I prefer to have dinner which is low on carbohydrates and high on protein.

How did Kurash change your life?

It has given me more confidence that I can do better in sports as well as in my personal life. It has also made me more disciplined in life
