He is in Class XI at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park and pursuing Physics, Chemistry and Math. He has a deep interest in music — listening, playing, and especially classical music. Therefore, it is not surprising that at a zonal competition, he won second position (senior category) for Swar Instrumental Music. Meet Rudraksh Maheshwari.
In a candid interview, he shares his musical journey.
What inspired you to participate in this event?
My biggest inspiration has always been the smile of my gurus and the happiness of my parents. I can trade anything for that joy. The moment I see them proud of me, it motivates me even more. The bright smile on their faces when I win a competition is incomparable, and that feeling inspired me to participate in the zonal competition.
Can you tell us about your musical journey?
I started learning music when I was four years old. My first teacher introduced me to classical music, and the first instrument I learnt was the keyboard. Later, I participated in Annual Appreciation Days at the school and was exposed to new instruments like the harmonium. I practice rigorously, doing my daily riyaaz from 5-7 pm. My teachers’ belief in me always kept me motivated.

What was your experience like during the zonal competition?
This was my second zonal competition, so I was less nervous compared to the first. Since I regularly perform at school assemblies, Annual Days, and Inter-school competitions, I have overcome stage fright to a large extent. During my performance, I made a small mistake, but I quickly corrected it on the spot, making it less noticeable to the judges. My calmness and presence of mind really helped me secure the second prize.
What unique qualities do you bring to your performances?
For me, music is not just a subject or an art form; it is a way of living. Whenever I am going through hard times, music becomes my therapy. It helps me focus, concentrate, and even supports my studies. My passion ensures that every performance comes from the heart.
Are there any particular artists or genres that influence your music?
I love listening to legends like Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan, and Jagjit Singh. Their work influences my music deeply, inspiring me to bring the same depth and soul into my performances.
Any upcoming events or releases that you’re excited about
I am preparing for my District-level competition, and after that, I aim to participate in the State-level competition. I am really excited to continue this journey and take my music to the next stage.
