The annual CompuFest 2024 at Seth Anandram Jaipuria School witnessed remarkable talent from across the region, and Apeejay School, Noida, made its mark yet again. The duo, Kartikey Agarwal (class XI) and Vipul Mittal (class XII), secured the second position in the prestigious Algorithmic Arithmetic event, showcasing their exceptional problem-solving and coding prowess. In a conversation, both students shared their experiences, challenges, and valuable insights for aspiring coders.

Kartikey Agarwal

HIs enthusiasm for Math and Coding made the Algorithmic Arithmetic event an obvious choice. “It was the perfect platform to challenge myself and refine my skills,” he shared. The competition wasn’t without its hurdles — he faced a question based on unfamiliar concepts but relied on his strong foundational knowledge. “I approached the problem step by step, applying the basics to crack the solution,” Kartikey explained.

Accuracy under pressure was crucial, and Kartikey’s strategy involved meticulous reading and continuous debugging. “Carefully understanding the problem statements is key. I debugged in stages to avoid compounding errors,” he advised.

Balancing creativity with logic, he emphasised thinking innovatively while grounding solutions in core concepts. His advice for future participants? “Build a solid foundation in algorithms and mathematics, stay calm, and trust your skills.”

Vipul Mittal

Participating in the Algorithmic Arithmetic event stemmed from his deep-rooted passion for Math and Computer Science. The most challenging problem involved complex 3D Geometry with JEE Advanced-level concepts. “Kartikey simplified and solved the equations, while I implemented the logic and coding. Our teamwork was crucial,” Vipul noted.

Precision under time constraints was managed through seamless collaboration. “We consistently motivated each other and tackled different problems simultaneously,” he explained. Vipul believes balancing creativity and logic involves exploring multiple ideas and refining them through effort.

“Try everything and stick with what works,” he suggested. His message to future participants is clear: “Practice relentlessly, plan efficiently, and optimise your approach. Seek help from teachers and peers — it makes all the difference.”
