Graduating from PYP-5 in the IB curriculum marks a significant milestone in a student’s learning journey. It signifies the culmination of inquiry-based learning, the development of key skills, and readiness to transition into the Middle Years Programme. Meet one such student, Suvir Kain, who has recently gone into MYP-1 at Apeejay’s IB School, Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park.

In a candid interview, he shares his journey for the session 2024-25.

Which learner profile attribute do you think you developed the most?

An inquirer. This year, I really became curious about many topics we studied. I would often ask questions not just in class but also at home. I wanted to know how things work and why they happen the way they do.

How has your school helped you become a better researcher, communicator, or thinker?

My school has helped me become a researcher by giving me websites that are accurate for making a presentation or project. My school also gave me books based on a topic which I wanted to research. Sometimes we work in groups, and I learnt how to take turns while speaking and listen carefully to others’ ideas. This made me a better communicator.

What Approaches to Learning skills do you feel most confident in now?

I think I am most confident in my research skills. I now know how to plan my research, collect information, and use it meaningfully in my projects. I’ve also become better at organising my thoughts and noting down important points from books and websites.

What did you learn from the field trip that connected with what you were studying?

Our school took us to a Spanish Embassy where they taught us about Spanish culture and made us take a test. It was exciting to experience the culture we were reading about in our classes. We learnt about traditional food, music, festivals, and even basic Spanish words.

Which unit of inquiry was the most exciting for you this year?

The most exciting UI for me was the government and it’s functioning. It felt very grown-up to learn how countries are managed and who makes decisions. The activities and mock debates helped me feel like a young leader.

How did the unit change your thinking?

The unit gave me an understanding of how the government works in different countries, especially in areas of politics and the economy. Now I understand that every country has its system and that leaders have a big responsibility.

What is your most memorable learning moment?

I can’t recall a specific learning moment. But I enjoyed working on group projects, art-integrated lessons, and any time we had to present our work to the class. These moments made learning fun and helped me grow more confident.

What advice would you give to a future PYP-5 student?

It is going to be fun when the learning is done with teachers and students having happy and healthy communication. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and try new things. PYP-5 is full of exciting activities and lessons if you stay curious and enjoy the journey.
